Stanley Cup Riot . . . I'm not surprised.

I had a pretty strong feeling that there was going to be some kind of trouble.  When I was working out at the gym this morning I overheard a couple of young guys talking about going to the Fan Zone downtown. One of them said that no matter what the outcome of the game was going to be he and his buddies were going to "trash the place" at the end of the game. During the game the Hockey Night in Canada crew vaguely mentioned drug and alcohol abuse going on in the crowds near their broadcast position... this was trouble in the making from the beginning.

Once again after a Stanley Cup Final ends in Vancouver some moronic shit disturbers have shown that the city of doesn't deserve to win a hockey championship and I hope they never do.  Just when you think the city had grown up after several big party events that had gone off with minimal trouble, this happens.  At the moment I write this there are car fires at the Hudson's Bay building, the London Drugs building at the corner of Granville and Georgia is being looted. The Hudson's Bay store and at least half a dozen small businesses have been vandalized, looted.  Most of the pieces of crap who are instigating this appear to be late teens, 20 something aged guys, ( as reported by news media and seen on the live news coverage in the past few hours.)  Testosterone + alcohol + drugs + bravado = stupid.

Just watching the mayor, (at 10:30pm) and he has said the rioters are a small group of "young angry Hooligans" determined to cause trouble. Several car fires reported, some injuries and the police are saying that some of the group are comprised members of the "Black block" anarchist group.  Channel 9 news showed a car on fire in front of Granville Skytrain station, an idiot tried running through the fire and fell into it, then jumped out again after getting singed.  Some Bruins fans were attacked by these thugs and an amazing thing is that many of these fucks are committing crimes and taking pictures of themselves while doing it!  At 10:55pm a nearby Sears store is being looted and many who are downtown can't figure out how to get out. Transit has been re routed in many cases, the Granville SkyTRain station has been closed, at 11:00pm fights have been reported on Robson at Howe.

Even though I'm a Calgary Flames fan I was pulling for Vancouver (a bring the cup back to Canada type of thing.) But from this day forward I will never be doing that again, I'm too damn ashamed and disgusted to say anything else about this, there is NO excuse for tonight's events, absolutely none.   Enjoy the Stanley Cup Boston, you deserve it far more than Vancouver this night.

There's something floating around Facebook that people should keep in mind and act upon it:

The mayor has called anyone to hand in their pictures tonight, he wants to hold those who are responsible for this bullshit accountable for it. mayor and police are looking for them, so if you have any then please give them forwards. EVERYONE SHOULD RE POST THIS. those responsible SHOULD be held accountable.

While it is ridiculous that this happened, it's simply not fair to paint all Vancouverites/Canucks fans (real ones) with the same brush. For however many hundreds or thousands there were out there tonight, especially ones who were planning on causing trouble REGARDLESS, there are hundreds of thousands of people in and around Vancouver who ARE NOT rioting. There are people within the riot who are trying to stop it, aside from police officers.
Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way you're right.
Laugh, and the world laughs with you. Cry, and the world laughs harder.

While I don't condone the actions of the rioters, I don't give a damn what people think of Vancouver-fans after this bullshit: I'm still a Vancouver fan.

The Vancouver hockey team and organization didn't do this; the stupid-shit 18-year-olds are the ones fucking it up for everyone.  Let them.  I'm still going to be going to games next season and watching my favourite team at home.

I am not a big sports fan, but it would have been nice for us to win. I remember the 94 riot, was hoping this shit wouldn't happen again. I agree whole heartily with H u nn y, if you have any video's or photos of people starting, joining in, breaking windows anything of the sort please turn copies into police. These are not fans, but a bunch of a-holes who shouldn't be walking the streets.

On another matter, a lot of our community were at the game or watching it on the big screens downtown, is everyone ok? Did they make it home ok?

Hfour, that was a good video of the firemen taking care of the fires, but I sure hope you or someone managed to get that quality video's or photos of the criminals involved in this matter. Please tell me you got some shots before the fire, they may help police also, in the investigation. Any photos shot just before the riot started in the area of the burning cars, busted windows and such would be a great help.

I'm not big on Ice hockey since...its almost non-existent where I am right now (Soccer is the popular sport here....even though we don't have any good-enough local teams. xD ), but I do know about how popular the Canucks are and how much this close victory meant to them...
But.. I'm rather shocked at how serious these riots are. Torching cars and stuff....Arrest them hooligans!

I guess I'd better stay home, just in case this happens again when I'm there...and in college. :[

Katsuke, don't go and do that, that would be a loss for you and the others in the community (not furry but Vancouver). Don't let the old saying a few bad apples spoil the bushel. Vancouver is a great place for the most part, just take a look at the Olympics, last group of beeps that started a riot was in 1994.  If we all did that (stay at home) because of a bunch of, of ..... bad apples, we would have no fur meets, no conventions .... no community. Looking forward to your arrival, this community will show you what Vancouver is really like. Nothing like what you saw last night.

I went downtown with a few fellow furs for the game yesterday. The atmosphere was cool... until the second goal was scored.. kinda went down hill from there. I am saddened by the riots, but they were caused by a couple dozen or so young adults. Booze, drugs, hormones and the mob mentality are all to blame. I agree that not all fans/vancouverites are to blame, just a few kids. I will be wearing my jeresy to work tomorrow, I hope to see a ton more people do the same.

I was just remembering and thinking about the riot of 94. Has the world gotten so bad that people just don't give a F--- now (this community excluded). In the vids I have watched about what happened last night, I see people cheering the rioters, standing there doing nothing, even clearing the streets. In 94, people linked their arms and stood in front of shop windows, protecting them, or clearing the area if they were not so the police could deal with it. What happened to the world I knew, when one respected ones elders, helped your neighbours, and said hi in the streets. ???

It wasn't even about the game. Either way they were going to riot. Most of them planned to destroy stuff and hurt people before they even arrived. It was a very embarrassing and pathetic night full of retards trying to be on tv. I will be downtown today helping with the clean-up.
I've said and done things I regret here, so I just don't do anything instead.

I'm not really into any sports and neither is my sister but she was convinced to go down town with a few friends last night. Once I heard about the riots I started freaking out. But I'm happy to report she didn't get hurt and got home safe.
I'm really saddened that this happened and fully believe that even if we won riots would have occurred. I as well heard that many younger males were planing to trash the place no matter who won. I will never understand people who think it's fun to damage property, put ppl in harms way and what not.

My sister claims she took many picture so I will be making sure she gives those into the police. It is really sick that this happened. I will never understand why transit stopped their routs while the police told everyone to get out.How where people supposed to get out when the transit stopped their buses and the bridges were closed ?

it took my sister so long to find a open skytrain station to even start getting home.
I find those actions just about as stupid as the rioters.

I would have to agree with you on that Velvety. If transit had concerns about problems happening on the trains, they should have called their police force out. That's what they are for and what as taxpayers pay for, they wanted to be recognized as a true police force, with guns, the ability to arrest and detain. Not to mention we (taxpayers) spent millions on new security cameras in stations and trains. I personally feel that we should write or email translink, city of vancouver and the bc government asking why, I for one will be!

They should have at the very least allowed the trains to run out of the city core, I can understand why they wouldn't want more people coming in.

I can't believe that some people would over react about a hockey game...now thats what I call poor sportsmanship, we know were better than that, stupid rioters.
It's not yer content, it's how you pitch it too people
