In the three months since the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, 3D TV has gone from science fiction to actuality.  All of us probably grew up with some notion of 3D television as being a thing we would see in the future.  At the CES, it seemed this would finally be the year; three months later, the first 3D TVs are already available in the Lower Mainland.  These new televisions play 2D as well as 3D images, but you require special glasses to see 3D images.  The industry seems ready to market 3D TV in this decade the way it marketed HDTV in the 2000s.  But what does everyone here think about the sudden appearance of 3D TV?  Have you seen it yet?  Do you plan to get one, if not now then someday?  Does 3D have a future over 2D?

*Personal opinion:  During the Olympics I happened to come across a 3D TV on display in the Sony Store at Pacific Center.  It broadcast footage of a polar bear underwater and I could have sworn it was on the other side of the glass.   But I am not going to rush out and buy a 3D TV.  As of yet there is no standardized 3D format, the technology is new, and I will not spend $250 for the pair of glasses alone.

The technology does exist where the TV is capable of projecting a different image to each eye, and it doesn't require you to be sitting in a certain spot to see it...

I would pay for that technology, as I have issues with wearing anything on my face.

Furthermore, the method I mentioned wuld create a much more true 3D effect, as the design would cause the slightly different angles to have a 'passing' effect if you were to walk past the TV as you were looking at it.

Kinda like the effect they added when the Super Nintendo came out, where the background moves slower than the foreground, except you're moving instead of your view.

I actually got to play on a 3D TV at PAX 09. Think it was MW2, some kind of FPS blah.
I actually went to the Sony store yesterday and i tryed it out again but watched some weird underwater thing. Not really a fan of it much. I'm allready jumpy enough, don't need things actually jumping out at me D: !!!

Already exists.  A woman claimed she got pregnant from watching it because it was so realistic.

They should spray the audience with water at carefully planned moments.

Lol!  That would make some people obsess, and others freak out and never go back.

That technology does work, but it also does not. (been around since the 80's) the trouble is, you need to be DEAD center to the tv for it to work, no moving, no angles NOTHING, tis its downside.  thats why the 3DS works, your centered on the screen, and it uses that technology.   but 3D tv with ought glasses being a consumer item? No.

As for 3D tv in general? Yes.  (this IS also someone who sells them....) right now its a little rough around the edges, but its first gen technology (in respect to consumer distribution) but its something that IS going to catch, its WICKED.  Sharp already has glasses that will turn 3D into 2D if somone in the family cant watch 3D but everyone else wants to.  now Panasonic has a 3D up-converting Plasma TV samsungs tvs all do it (even their 1499.99 fifty inch package deal with two pairs of glasses and a 3D blu Ray player)  its the next big thing like HD TV was.  this will be a little slower to be mass marketed but in my store? already have over 5 3D Tvs.

3D is a gimmick at this point. Only a couple of movies used 3D in such a way that it looked good - Avatar for one. And, personally, I hate wearing glasses (bulky ones at that!) to watch stuff like this. I'll gladly stick to 2D stuff for now.

3D is here to stay ;3

Riot Da Woof!

3D is unfortunately going to remain it's gimmicky "pop-out" self until more movies will incorporate "Depth of Field" the way that avatar did :/.
As it sits, 3D T.V's at this point of time is not a very wise investment, Though if you MUST have it, I wouldn't mind seeing how well those 4000$ T.V's work ;).
