We all have our own unique names in the fandom, and a lot of us have stories behind the choices we made upon choosing our fursona names. If you have one and you'd like to share it, feel free too. Many of them are interesting to hear, so speak up!

The story about my name was partly through the anime I watched, more particularly the character I cosplayed, Mitsukuni Haninozuka, from Ouran High School Host Club. Or better known as Hunny-senpai. He had a bubbly personality that I enjoyed. About two years ago roughly, I welcomed a new family member into my home, my now 2 1/2 year old kitty name Hunny. Based on those two, the bubbly personality of the character I cosplayed, and my extremely hyper kitty, after joining the furry fandom, I thought giving myself the 'sona' name Hunny was the best choice. It suited me well and I thought it was very cute~ ^ 0^

zenia

Mine was just my online name before I ever became a furry.

I liked to walk around my high school and try to think up new names. One day my tongue stumbled over this one. I didn't know at the time it was a name that already existed (though I spelled it differently and had a slightly different pronunciation). I liked it so I used it. Then the surname is just my favorite animal (and now fursona species) spelled as though it were a last name.

Rant

It's a real nick name, since I was young. My older sister had two boston terriers she took to fly ball and I liked to help. One of the ladies on the team had a staffy named Rant that I instantly bonded with, and was always around, they started calling me Rant because wherever I went she'd follow... :/   :-3

My original fursona was a white staffy, and it hasn't changed too much :3

Brittany-shadowwolf

My fursona's name is Shadow.

I made her as a kid, and I never changed the name.
It's ironic since her name is 'Shadow' and she is afraid of the dark.
Her back story is still a work in progress. If you guys want I can try and type what I got so far.

FurryJackman

My username came from when I wasn't too serious on the fandom. Of course, I needed the "Furry" and the "Man" in the name to differentiate from my real name, Jack.

My Raccoon is just called Jack, after my IRL self.

My Micro Fox self is named George "Zed" Fox because of George Shrinks and Antz. "Zed" is the Canadian way to say our protagonist from Antz: Zee.

Tony Greyfox

I borrowed the name Anton from a character in Steve Gallacci's "Birthright" comics, which ran in 'Critters' in the late '80s (I believe); originally I was online with the name of my D&D character, Thog (strength 18/60, intelligence 4), but when he got his face eaten off by some sort of undead thingie I figured I'd go with something else, and that felt right, when shortened to Tony. (His middle name, in-character, is K'Therin, which I've developed as a patronymic - 'kit of Therin' - his father's name is Therin. And Greyfox is his clan name. I think way too hard about my characters' backgrounds.)

Other characters I run occasionally: Dhani (panther; Dhani is from Swahili, though apparently it also means 'rich' in Hindi - I picked it for a character I play on a Lion King RP and transferred her over to my other RP areas); Keileigh (ferret - just a cool spelling); Kamau (zebra - I forget which African language I got this one from, but it means 'Silent warrior').

Lt ReiStark

I have a god father who came all the way from England to see me but by then i was already named Marklen so he didn't get to help name me, but he said that if he could have he would have given me the name "Dante Dorian Jones" as my unoffical name. that is why my fursona is named Dante, and his brother is Dorian, and why his aunt's last name is Jones.
Dante spent most of his time as a teen playing Devil May Cry because the main character's name is Dante, so as a young adult he started "In The Night" as his company, he investigates the paranormal and exterminates evil, not to mention the large liabrary of books on such things he keeps. when you see him he will likely be in a long black jacket with white lining, black cargo pants, and holding a Winchester rifle over his shoulder clanging against his black feather earring.
Black, Pink, Silver, Lead, and a whole lot of fun.

Drake Wingfire

Mine was created back when I was no older than 13-14 and I was just getting into the fandom, I had this dragon character (yes, me the red, white and yellow one here) that I use to draw a lot and i had a tendency to draw him simply living out my own fantasy's.. but that's aside the point, I pretty much bridged the gap and took on the identity as my own seeing as really Drake Wingfire was nothing more than a mirror/ inner personification of myself.

The name came from a relative lack of imagination, I was heavy into Dragonheart at the time and was on the world biggest dragon bend haha. The name Drake always seemed like a cool.. yet very cliche dragon name right next to every single other name that literally translates into "dragon" in some other language haha. So knowing that at the time I opted to come up with a last name for myself and really all I did was look at my character and go "hmmmm.. uhhh... any relevant features that could pertain to a dragony last name..... hey! red and yellow wings... looks kinda fiery... Wingfire?.. hmm sure!" lol thats more or less the story behind my name. XD

Masozi

Kamau (zebra - I forget which African language I got this one from, but it means 'Silent warrior').

*Yoda voice*   Gone is the hyena you once knew. . .changed to Masozi he has. . .with it deal.  *end Yoda voice*

Van_Fox

Well Van_Fox means Im a fox that lives in Vancouver XD Pretty easy. But my fursona name is my own. Van_Fox is just my online name, as well as Spice_Weasel021 and Foxy_Gamer.

Maoi Neko

M'aoi is a contraction of the Japanese words for green (midori) and blue (aoi) mixing to make a feline sounding name. Also my fursona has turquoise hair which is a mixture of green and blue. The last name, Neko, is just Japanese for cat which I figured would be a common family name for Japanese cats.

Mattfolx

I couldn't decide if my fursonas name should be completely made up or if I should keep it simple.

So I just scrunched wolf and fox together and got Folx
but then it sounded too simple to me, so I ended up just putting
my actual name into it...making it more simple

DARG!!! XD
It's not yer content, it's how you pitch it too people

Blue

Mine I got from Second Life, where my avatar is a blue girl.. People ended up just calling her Blue, and the name stuck.
Your wish is mine to twist.

mediar

My gaming name is "media", I had friends that called me Mee Dee Air (mediar). I rolled a cat character in EQ2, named him mediar. Needed to pick a name for furries, changed it to sound like mee dee arrr(media). The End.

Nayr

Ryan backwards equals Nayr. Nothing too special, just kinda thought it sounded cool.
