Maybe stress the fact that dinnermeets happen in public places? Nothing bad will happen in the middle of a restaurant.

thanks for the replies everyone, my dad hasn't said anything past the whole part of being shocked about it but my mom has voiced her displeasure in me being in the Fandom thinking it's gross and saying stuff like she doesn't want me to go to these dinner meets and stuff like that because I don't know anyone there and that I could be hanging out with people who will do me harm.  I could say that if I don't hang out with them how will I ever get to know what kind of people they are?

assuming that you do not know anybody in the furry crowd, a suggestion.  you and your dad go to a sushi night BUT you do not sit with the furries.  you sit somewhere close but not with.  maybe in the window corner where you can see how we are all not crazy, different maybe, but not harmful.  have your dad observe so that he can take a report back to your mother.  i say just your dad because it appears your mother 1/ wouldn't go, 2/ might cause you embarrassment, 3/ or something equally traumatic. once your dad sees that we are a safe group for you, then maybe life will get easier.

with the walk planned for Robson st you have another chance.  bring your mother downtown to observe the group from afar.  see how we try to have fun.  keep your distance, and if your mother attempts to make a scene, you can walk away.  if she does try to make a scene, tell her that she should be a furry for two reasons.  1/ there is lots of drama in the fandom and 2/ furries ruin everything.

number 2 is a furry inside joke.  don't take that one seriously.  hope to see you at a meet one day.
