ChapterAquila92

Greetings to all!

My name's Liam, I'm 22 years old, and I've been involved with the Furry Fandom for about 8 years as of this post.

I'm originally from the Ottawa region - born and raised - and this past Easter marked the start of my second year of living in Victoria, BC as part of what has now been five years of military service thus far.

My fursona is as per the image linked here: a bronze dragon from D&D with bionic replacements for his arm and eye on the left side.

Outside of military duty, my hobbies range from reading and writing to kayaking and martial arts. I've also had my hand in playing some pen-and-paper RPGs (Dungeons & Dragons 3.5, Mutants & Masterminds; have looked into "After the Bomb", "Only War", and Warhammer Fantasy RP), and I'm particularly fond of playing strategy games on both the tabletop and the computer. Speaking of strategy games, I can legitimately say that I joined the Fandom because of Warhammer (I collect Lizardmen, Imperial Guard, and SPESS MUHREENS).

Apart from here, I can be found at the following places:
DeviantART
SpaceBattles
Lustria Online
Steam

What books do you like to read?

I'm an avid fiction reader myself.

I generally prefer military fiction, whether it's historical, modern/near-future, or science fiction. That said, I've also enjoyed the odd fantasy novel on the side.

Thanks! I have had some collusion in the region - KitsuneShukko, whom I visit in Vancouver about once every couple of months or so; Tef, who I've known as a friend for five years now... I may have run into a few of you guys at VancouFur this year, even (compared to a certain red-headed Seattlite friend that attended however, I'm pretty unremarkable).

I got some books I can lend if you're interested sometime

I'll consider it. Likewise, I also have a small library of publications that I've acquired over the years - Science textbooks from when I attended university, novel-length essays on history (including military history), biology, psychology, engineering, etc.

Yay for more Victoria furries.   We will rival Vancouver soon.

That's great that you are in the military.

Hello there ChapterAquila92 and welcome!!!

It's awesome to meet another Canadian military fur! It's been my dream to serve ever since I was so young heh, I'm working on my fitness first though. I'm looking at Infantry, but I may look at what other options they have. Medical Technician has more requirements that I am seriously lacking unfortunately, otherwise I'd go towards that one within a heartbeat most likely! Heh, anyway!

Your fursona is awesome, by the way! Love it!
I am but a blade in the crowd.

Don't take my word for it - you may want to actually speak with the recruiting center about this - but from what I recall, applying for the combat arms trades, including Infantry, may be difficult because of the winding down of Afghanistan. However, I do know that the Navy is always looking for more people in general; as an Electrical Technician in the Navy, I can definitely say this for a fact amongst the MSE (Marine Systems Engineering) departments, some ships more than others.

If you're still intent on Infantry however, I would suggest visiting the Milnet forums and your nearest recruiting center for advice. I can also see about getting you in touch with my father - a former infantryman turned geomatics technician - if you wish to gain better insight into the trade itself.

Nice to hear that you're working on your fitness! If you've been looking for guidelines on the level of fitness the CF is looking for, here is the current fitness test that has been in circulation since last year. That said, as the later half of Basic Training will include what is called a Battle Fitness Test (it may also be called something else by more... colourful individuals), I'd also review this.

With all that said and done, TIA - Teamwork, Initiative, Attitude!

Thank you so much! ^^ I do still have quite a lot to learn, I'm not sure where to start first. Even fitness wise, I've been told you'll be using muscles you'd never thought you would have to use and some people think just because they're really good at running doesn't mean they'll do good they have to improve *everything*, for an example. Say guy/girl gets in, feels confident it'll be easy, but when it came to push ups or anything upper body of the sort they weren't prepared at all. I know more than likely they'd have you using muscles you're not use to or thought you needed to I just don't want to struggle so hard but I know it's not like taking a walk through a park. I know I will have moments of struggle I just don't want to struggle *too* hard, know what I mean? I also had an ex American friend told me his Basic Training was easy (lol but funny enough he got kicked out for talking to his girlfriend on the phone when he wasn't suppose to...) but yeah. I should just go to a recruiting center like you say. One guy I even spoke to said I should spend a while in his office, to talk all day if I needed to haha! :P

Indeed, it can be quite the learning curve at the start. Fitness-wise, PSP staff are the people to go to as they will be the ones running the gyms (every CF base and establishment has its own gym) and conducting your PT tests. Aside from that, PT sessions during training will typically be every other week day and alternate between cardio and strength/core, with the occasional pool session thrown in.

As the saying goes, there's a time and place for everything. Not much more I can say about that other than to use your best judgement.

That said, I'm kind of curious to know if your friend applied for a branch of the US military or for the Canadian Forces - there's a fair number of differing paradigms between the two militaries that are relevant during training. Speaking of which, here is a basic summary of what you should be expecting to see during basic training at Saint-Jean.

Any chance you get to actually be where you'll likely be working is always beneficial, and I would highly recommend it whenever you can.
