So, after looking at my old desktop computer for ages since getting my new laptop, I've been thinking about transforming it into a fully dedicated server for Canadian Furs on Steam, but it will also be open for anyone else to join as well. It will be used for many games, such as Team Fortress 2, GoldenEye: Source, Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, Doom 3, and so on.

If anyone can give me plenty of tips, advice, and hand-on tutorials on how I can do so, I would be highly appreciative. I'll also set up a donation drive on the server as well.

Oh, and if you need to be given an invite to the Steam group itself, let me know what your SteamID is, and I'll send an invite. :3
I understand that scissors can beat paper, and I get how rock can beat scissors, but there's no way paper can beat rock. Paper is supposed to magically wrap around rock, leaving it immobile? Why can't paper do this to scissors? Screw scissors, why can't paper do this to people? Why aren't sheets of college ruled notebook paper constantly suffocating students as they attempt to take notes in class? I'll tell you why, because paper can't beat anybody; a rock would tear it up in two seconds. When I play Rock-Paper-Scissors, I always choose rock. Then, when somebody claims to have beaten me with their paper, I can punch them in the face with my already clenched fist, and say, "Oh sorry, I thought paper would protect you."

What about Dawn of War 2? That is the only Steam game I have...

Hence why I said, "And so on" in my post. xD It'll be configured to be a host of many games.

As happens, I'm about 1 hard drive away from firing up my duacl-core server.  I was planning on using that as a dedicated gaming server.  Using VMWare, I can crate a number of game images and then just swap between them as needed to run different games.

I heard you talking about this at Kaji's place, lol. I was right beside you. I don't have a Steam ID, and I love Half Life and Valve game goodness (Except L4D). Only game I have that's from Steam is AudioSurf. Lol =\ I cheated at getting that though.

AUDIOSURF FTW!

Vanilla Skunk

How'd you cheat?  I've tried that game, it was cool, but ran out of songs on the demo.

It's a wonderful thing called a torrent. Lawlz

Main thing with any of these sorts of dedicated servers: upload, upload, upload! :P

Your typical home subscriber lines (Shaw cable, Telus DSL, etc.) suck hard when it comes to your upload bandwidth.  I pay extra for Shaw's 'Xtreme-I' package and that still only gives me 1Mbps upload (but 15Mbps down).  Unless you live in an apartment with Novus and their 10/10 synchronous link, you're not going to be able to host more than 5-10 people tops, depending on the game, and even then that could be a bit of a stretch before things get really laggy. :/

Not to mention, for newer Steam/Source-based games specifically, I think they're still quite resource intensive on the server, especially when it comes to RAM.  Make sure that box has at least 1GB, maybe more depending on any mods/maps you run.

OMGBALLOON! ~chases it~
"My life is a stereo, turn me on and let's go. Turn me up louder, I'll scream as loud and clear as I can, and if you like what you are hearing, then please hang onto me."
