Hey there furs, I have a problem that commonly occurs quite often (especially considering I go to meets now lol)
I'm actually quite intimidated by people older than me  :-X
Well actually not always, it's more along the lines of when I first meet them that I get kind of worried. After I get to know them, I'm usually okay but still quite careful about what I say. It's to the point where I worry about what to say so much that I don't say anything at all.. :/
Some examples of what goes through my head is among the lines of "Oh gosh, they're older than me.. They probably think I'm just some annoying kid.. I hope I don't bother them too much.."

So what do you guys think? It is kind of a good thing to be wary of what to say but.. Haha ^^''

As time moves on for some people, things become more hectic with work and their schedule, maybe time moves slower or they care less for acting certain ways - but it all depends on the person. Some older people enjoy acting the age of the crowd, or enjoy the youth of people. As you have found, some people may look more serious than they are or act, some people may act more serious than they are to keep a level of respect in some situations.

It is hard to imagine anyone would wish to be intimidating in an open environment, beyond a little bit of character, or unintentional seriousness.

You cannot worry about what you want to say, if it is respectful and true to yourself too - you cannot please everyone, and if someone finds you are speaking about something they do not like, there are too many people in the world to care about. Find the people you can find level ground with, there are surely plenty that you have already met. The fandom is very open.
