Furry fiction archives or lack thereof

Anyone else wish there was another furry fiction archive out there besides Yiffstar (that people actually used, I mean)? Its design, coding, and, well, frankly also content all drive me bonkers - I find it hard to find anything good because people seem to rate up the mediocre stuff as well.

I'd consider starting one but have terrible visions of how much of my time it would take up.

I know there's some stuff on FA, as well, but I find that without tag-based searching it's really only good for finding more stuff by people I already know I like.

Tony Greyfox

Absolutely. There have been any number of adult sites, but I don't recall anything that was for a general audience, or reasonably formatted.
All of my stuff is up on FA, and the adult stuff on Yiffstar - I definitely know which one gets more traffic. Some of my stories have nearly 5000 hits on Yiffstar... and maybe 50 on FA. Stories get horribly lost amongst the steady flow of artwork there. Mind you, general-audience stuff disappears into the mist most places - when I had my one piece published by Anthro, I got no comments at all.
It'd be great to have a dedicated fiction archive of some sort - I'd be there in a second, and I have a feeling a lot of other authors would be.

I've also noticed that there's so much shit writing out there when it comes to furry fiction. I think a site that insists on basic quality would be a good idea. I am so sick of reading horrific, face-clawing errors that you would think a 4th grader could spot.
What is this I don't even. What I put here?

This is why I tend not to read a lot of stuff. It's hard to dig through the crap to find the gold sometimes, and that always disappoints me.

Its honestly quite sad... I think what would be really good is a place where we can put our unpolished stuff out for someone else to edit. After all sometimes a writer is just too blinded by his own greatness to see that... well he screwed up BAAD. Thats what editors are for and I think it would help all of us... what do you think?

Tony Greyfox

That would definitely be useful. I know when I submitted a piece to ANTHRO, the editor's suggestions were really useful - most of the time I feed stuff to friends to read, and get responses ranging from detailed "this sucks" notes to people saying "nice" and nothing else. =P

I'd actually considered whether there were enough folks locally to start a writer's circle of some sort. Having some other eyes on my work can only be good.

XD I posted a story to another forum I got to (Scaletopia) And got lots of "Good" and "I love it" but... nothing that would really help me improve which is what I was hoping for lol

Tony Greyfox

That drives me nuts, yeah - feedback is definitely thin most of the time. The ANTHRO story, I got nothing after it was published - I don't even know if anyone read it. =P
(Mind you, I do get reasonable comments for the more adult works I've done; many of them are fascinating, biologically...)

Hehehe. I'll have to get something new written, then, so you can have some fresh material to skewer...

The problem is that sites like Yiffstar don't make any differentiation in their rating systems between "I thought that was well-written" and "I came", so poorly-written wank material gets rated up along with the well-written stuff. I'd like to see "literary merit" and "sexiness" be separate axes, but people would probably just use them improperly and give everything they like for any reason 5 points on both.
