Hey all,

I moved to Van recently, and my place is near the intersection of Kingsway and Fraser. Anybody know of some cool parks or hangout places in that area? I like to walk, but not too far - I did the 6.6 km to downtown last week, and oof. I'm out of shape  :P

What I want in a park is big trees, or logs to sit on, nice plants to look at... basically, anything that's NOT just a big ol' boring lawn. Barring that, I like the occasional hangout in a coffee shop, if it's nifty inside. Anybody have any recommendations?

walk east on 16 and you will come to a school / park.  walk north on prince albert to 8th and then east.  you will come to a large park.  east on 18 and there is a park between clark and commercial.

since you have internet access, check your address on mapquest.ca and locate the parks near you.
1 ton truck available for hire.  contact me by personal message for info

The third one mentioned is Clark Park, I think? There's also John Hendry Park (Trout Lake) east of Victoria in the 14th-18th area, which is a nice big park.

I enjoy longish walks myself - I'm over near 1st and Commercial.

I live on around Fraser too! :D

The park on 8th you mentioned is very nice. On main and 8th or so is the public library. Across from it is a cafe called Gene which is reasonably priced and is a destination of groovy art-types. :3 A little further up on Main there is a Tim Hortons (though it has no windows, kinda creepy x.x) You'd benefit from exploring the different areas of Vancouver in more depth. Mt. Pleasant is really rad but tend to not constrict myself to the area (though charming as it is). I walk all around Vancouver every day (that I am not busy) and soak in every coffee shop I can afford and attraction I come across. There are so many different cliques of people and the interactions with all different types can be so fun! :p

It's getting into the rainy season but people will still be having fun!

My most pleasant experience: Chilling with random people at the Skream concert at Celebrities (on LSD, huhuhuh) The place felt like a spaceship!

Anyway... A lot of very good artists play all around Van and you can typically find something cheap that has good musical value. Venues really try to fuck you on drinks though (it is how they pay for all the fancy renovations and stuff), so watch for that. :p Just be conscious of the money your spending. If you do a little planning you can enjoy good music cheap and have a good time with occasionally hip people.

Another thing I've enjoyed is scanning papers and checking various art / photography / mixed media exhibitions and stuff. If you go the opening night the getups some people have are really decadent, the conversation are interesting and are all focused on the arts, quite funky my friends. Usually there is an excellent platter of free food quite easy to find and devour and you might get a free cocktail or wine or something. :D

If you just wander around you can find yourself in some funky situations... the other day I played a hundred-thousand dollar piano for a bit. I met an anchor off of CBC news a few months ago. I've had wild conversations and good laughs with strangers every day.

Wander around, be open and honest... have good intent and you'll find yourself in some cool places!

Peace,

W.S.
