I don't play, but I have a ton of friends that do. They're all in a corp together too, and they help each other out all the time. I've been thinking about trying it out, once I decide I am motivated enough and ask one of my friends to give me a 3 week trial. And if I do get into it, chances are I know people who would give me free ships.

My friends corp just had a popping party a few nights ago after they took down a bunch of ships from a rival corp that was talking smack about my friends corp for a while now.

Very nice, if its something you want to get into definitely do some research on what you want to do and fly. The initial training boost that you start with can take you far, but its easy to fall off track and start straining skills you don't have any use for XD
the game has a steep learning curve but the online community is awesome

this is how steep the learning curve really is

I've played this game considerably in both high sec and low sec and it has 2 fundamental flaws.
High sec, which can be considered the solo-able area of the game, lacks the economical resources to allow most people to get ahead in the game
Low/Null Sec, the active PVP area, the opportunity to make ISK is great, but finding a good null sec corp that operates on the pacific time zone is really hard
I have a character though and if there is an active following of players I would be happy to form and play around in a BC furry high sec corp

I play with a small Corp in Inaro, we do level 4s and mining ops they seem to have a claim to some WH space as well they are mostly Euro but have a few players in North America

If anyone hears about a group of people in EvE called the "International Space Pimps", those are the people my friends play with, and they are all locals, except for 1 person maybe.
