Edit:

Hey there, people;

It looks like our rooms are all completely full for the forseeable future.  Good luck in all your endeavors!  :)

Peli

Is this all heavy-machinery or janitorial-related work, or do you know if there are any highly paid IT positions open as well? :P
Always looking for potential job options.

Lady Serpent

I can certainly check further into it by asking around.  The last mine I worked at had IT positions, but I don't know for sure about what tech jobs are available here.

I'm fairly sure that IT jobs and anything in the offices would be on a regular 5x2 schedule with more 'normal' hours.

There are human resources positions that involve computer and clerical work that I know of right now.  Our company is this one, and they have some (not all) of the job postings available if you do a search under 'Careers'.  Don't let the qualifications scare you; they hire all kinds of people that aren't yet qualified, and train them to do what they need.  There are also other jobs not posted, and of course other mines and places to work.  If you're interested in something specific like IT, we can take your resume and tailor it, and then get it distributed around here to the positions you're interested in.  (Or give you the contact info of those people, so you can send it in yourself).

Although, I should say to people interested.. if you're flexible, and possibly willing to try something completely new, there are TONNES of entry-level jobs that have great pay and benefits, as well as entirely new skillsets that they train you with.  I just found a random one for learning to install and run wind turbines, and there are lots of other things including health-and-safety coordinators, entry-level equipment operators, and other things I can't think of off the of the top of my head., as well as just your regular jobs such as Subway, grocery store person, bank teller, etc.

Malikai Wolf

wow this sounds awesome, both the job/pay and you guys too. I'm graduating high school this year and have a background in electronics and robotics and would love to do something with electricity but I also like the sound of driving huge trucks for a laid back job. I may live near Vancouver but have spent more time in the bush then downtown :P If you guys could ask or look at jobs that would be working with electricity like maybe site electrition or something that would be greatly appreciated :)

Lady Serpent

Hey Malikai;

I'm pretty sure I've either met you, or heard your name around somewhere.

I looked into what I could find just offhand.   It looks like most jobs that are specifically working with electricity require you to actually go through schooling to become an electrician, although I did find an entry-level position that sounds pretty interesting.  (Almost makes me want to try it, to be honest!)  It's working with wind turbines; being taught how to install and manage them.  They train you; it looks like it's through one of the consulting companies which usually have good pay and benefits.

Here's a link.  Again, if you need a hand on searching or building a resume, I know the kind of mindset they have around here with regards to resumes and things and can certainly help you tailor something to fit.  Link:  http://www.workopolis.com/EN/job/13719698

There are a number of Tumbler Ridge job search sites online, and more jobs unposted.  Again, don't let qualifications scare you; often they're just ideal descriptions of a candidate and they'll consider hiring people that seem like they'd work well, even without the qualifications.  (Unless it's something you NEED to be qualified for.. for example, a journeyman carpenter or an environmental superintendant.)

Lady Serpent

Other random positions, possibly of interest:

Office admin:  (Not specifically IT, but computer-heavy and you can probably move towards an IT focus once there.  Pays less than driving, but still decent wages and benefits.  Regular 5x2 schedule:  http://www.jobbank.gc.ca/detail-eng.aspx?OrderNum=6348908&Source=JobPosting

Health and Safety officer:  (I did some of this while doing Environmental work at a different mine.  Good job; usually fairly cushy but quite important to the mine.)  Could use some First Aid training or other valid safety experience to secure a position.  Good pay/benefits.  http://www.jobbank.gc.ca/detail-eng.aspx?OrderNum=6348968&Source=JobPosting

Also, some places will pay your transportation costs to get out here.  Some will even pay a living allowance, though I have no way of finding out which ones do, short of asking them all.

graneth

God damn! this is an amazing thread. I'm definitely going to apply, though I have no experience, I have my OSSA regional (Alberta)[chasing a job prospect there at one point -dead ended] , CSTS, and First Aid(1) so I'm going to apply with the "Expression of interest application".

I certainly hope this one pulls through, this is just the kind of change of pace my life needs, A career, a driving force, a change of scenery.

Definitely didn't expect to see a thread like this here :P
One must explore all aspects of their mind to find the true path.

Malikai Wolf

Wow thx ya that sound like a fun job I will definatly look more into other jobs there too :)

Lady Serpent

Thanks, Graneth.  Hopefully it works out well.  :)

On that note, I would make sure to email them a few weeks later if you don't hear back, inquiring as to whether they got your application.  There are a lot of changes going on lately with the new contract in place, and paperwork is sure to be shuffled.

If you want a better chance, too, I can forward the resume directly.  Perhaps, if you don't hear back right away, it would be an idea to do both -- submit online, and then have a paper copy delivered later.  Just let me know if you're up for it whenever.

Cheers;

Thanks to everybody who sent emails.  It looks like a company has started work in town that wants to rent ALL of the rooms for $800 each (which is more than we were asking for, initially).  They're basically taking up all the rooms in town that we're aware of and looking for more, and the town is only going to keep expanding as long as the market stays good.  (Which it's predicted to do for the next ten years, at least).  So, in the interest of making good money on rentals for a few months, the rooms will be taken up until around September or so, at which point we'll be opening them up again for other people from town.

We do have a couple furs interested and we're currently rennovating to make room for one in particular, as we'd much prefer to spend time with furs and neat people than to rent rooms to randoms, but for now it looks like we're pretty full until around September.

If you ARE interested in coming out here to work, I'll certainly still help with resume editing and pointing you in the right direction, and we *might* even be able to make something work with a room.  You'll have to get hired out here or at least have the first month of rent available if you want to live with us, though, as we can't really do favours for people we don't know if there's a chance at losing a guaranteed $800 a month in rent.  :)

Glad to see so many people interested in making a shift.

All the best;
-Lady Serpent  (Sephren)

Sikkab

Wow, you guys are really going out of your way to find some awesome roomies. Good luck with your search! :)

I've always been told to never look a life behind a window to go outside and join the world, but what about the world behind that window makes the outside so much better?

Lady Serpent

Hahaha, I didn't realize it would be taken that way, but thank you.  I rather enjoy helping people out with opportunities that they're willing to take initiative in, and living with other like-minded people and being able to spend time, road-trip and do art with (or for) such people is something we certainly find fun in.

Things have been busy getting rooms set up and bathrooms rennovated, but I still do check this once in a while.  Email works best, though, for anyone willing to put some effort into applying out here and interested in the situation.  A few other companies are now hiring as well; I'll have their info saved for anybody who wants to apply.

Cheers;

Lady Serpent

So, Tumbler Ridge is booming and it looks like all the rooms are completely booked up until at least August.  If you're interested in coming out, I'd suggest putting out resumes where you're interested, and if you're able to land a job we'll certainly have opportunities for places to live around August.

Cheers, and thanks for everybody who was interested!
