Hello!

My name is Ben Nelms and I am a 23 year old editorial and documentary photographer based in Vancouver, B.C.

First of all, I am very interested in the furry culture and the creativity, determination and effort that comes along with creating a costume. I have heard about furries in the past and have met a couple furries in Ontario when I was going to university so I am not totally in the dark.

I am posting on this forum for a few different reasons;

I would like to meet a few furries and get a better understanding about the lifestyle. I am hoping there are some people on this forum that wouldn't mind educating me on the furry culture.

Ultimately, I would like to document one or two furries and create a photo essay on the lifestyle according to the subjects. What this would involve is some time spent being a fly on the wall and photographing the daily life of a furry: documenting the joy, obstacles and everything else that comes with being a furry.

I currently work for Reuters News Agency and freelance regularly for The Globe and Mail, National Post and a few other publications. In my spare time I find stories that interest me (such as furries) and create photo-essay's that are sometimes published in magazines or sometimes not....it all depends on the end result.

Please take a look at my website and blog and if you feel like you might be interested in telling your story please contact me through e-mail or phone!

Thanks!

Ehhhh I don't consider it a 'lifestyle' for me. It is just a hobby. Much like listening to music or drawing are also hobbies.

Welcome to the forums! I have to add to the point made about furries and lifestyles, it's not a correlation, nor would it necessarily be considered a gradience of correlation of sorts, but either way... good luck with your editorials, and documentaries!
Yipper yapper yip yap!
Living above the influence and proud.

Felix;

I'm afraid you would have a very boring time of it following most of us around; There really isn't a "lifestyle" beyond taste in art, as a rule. Following me would be incredibly boring; You'd simply be documenting the life of a night auditor with an indie-game development side-job, living in a fairly typical apartment on a fairly typical wage, with maybe two or three more stuffed animals than the usual household. Well, ignoring the suit of armor in the hallway, the armored overcoat and other unrelated-to-furry eccentricities; Some of us are members of multiple fandoms, but a fandom is not a lifestyle.

True, but that might just be the reality of it. I am not trying to sensationalise anything, just witnessing through my camera. Subtle moments are also often the most meaningful!

I thank all of you for welcoming me! I am hoping I can tag along to an event such as bowling night or a simple gathering....look at it this way, you get free photographs as well! :)

Cheers,
Ben

Ben;

I would recommend checking in with the event organizer first, but I suspect someone would be willing to let you tag along. Finding a life to survey may be somewhat more difficult. Best of luck to you.

Thanks Selkit! I appreciate it.
