drewdle

Hey everyone. Recently, I've been considering a name change of the internet variety. Just not sure where to look for inspiration. I've used "Drewdle" or "Drewdlephone" for almost six years now, and I'm at a pivotal point (going back to school, re-evaluating my art and interests, etc), so I thought perhaps a change of name would help with the freshening.

Where do you guys go for ideas on this sort of thing? I know some of it is personal, but currently, I'm drawing a huge blank.

Well the origin of my furry name "Mediar" is actually from my gamer name "media". I got media from the name of my monitor at the time "Art Media". Mediar came after some of my gamer friends call me that... not sure where they got it from :P
There are 10 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those that don't.

I had one of those monitors.  It was the best CRT monitor I ever had, even though it made a ton of clicking sounds whenever you switched modes.

Anyways, back on topic.

Sometimes a name is refreshing, but sometimes it's a pain.  If you change your name, people lose contact, can't find you, get sick of the name changing and don't bother hanging around, stuff like that...  at least from my experience.

I went from Dave to Nick to "Uramichi No Neko" which was supposed to be Alleycat but turned out to be Backstreet Cat... Alleycat is actually Nora Neko.

Then I decided I didn't want to fake japanese anymore, and went to Felix, seeing as it's a common house cat name, and there aren't all that many people named Felix.

My real name is so common that I hate the crap out of it.  I can shout my first name at Surrey Central, and like 30 people will turn, thinking the call is for them.

Anyhow, find a major interest in your life, and then find a name that goes along with.  If you like Music, you might pick a Mozart derivative.  Mahzerto. :P

Daryll

My internet name, which is fully Daryll Nathan Stonve, is something i came up with. Although i pronounce Daryll improperly (d-are-ill as opposed to d-air-ill), i picked it for its germanic/central european sounding. I caught onto using monickers early, thanks to mom and her zealous cautiousness. Since i usually rp... Well, it was the first name i chose for making a character. It stuck for ages. I still use it, actually.

I have to agree with felix changing your name can be complicated process, it can be done but only if you havent been using that name for long (aka people dont know you by that name). A local guy I wont mention changed his name at least 3 times that Ive heard of, people still called him by his original name even tho he wanted to be called (insert name here).
I myself successfully changed my name from Dalvid to Sairys without much difficulty, tho Im keeping that name for a suit I plan to have in the near-to-far future.
Also if you do plan to still change your name just for the love of dog dont pick something silly/stupid like wolfbiter345.

Vanilla Skunk

I've resorted to keeping the same name for me, and just creating other characters.

I myself go by Felix McKline, the longhair tuxido cat.

I also have another character known as Max Cazalet, the snowleopard, and hasn't really come out into the open.

Univaded_Fox

Univaded is actually a mispronunciation of the word "Undivided" that has been with me since childhood looking to serve a purpose.

drewdle

Interestingly, not much changed, and I'm going to implement it slowly. Drewdle is something I'm going to keep, but instead of "Drewdlephone", which doesn't make much sense, "Drewdlekins", which just plays up the silliness of Drewdle in the first place.

'Cause I'm silly, like that.

But I'll be changing it over slowly, and some places where I can actually register as Drewdle are just going to stay as they are, like the various fur forums. :)

Kell

I have always found friends changing their names, in the fandom, in gaming, and online in general, to be a painfully annoying process. Either you lose contact with them, have to re-add them to everything on the planet, or (my personal favorite, although mostly only happens on MMOs that don't allow name changes) you have to call them by a name that isn't what they display as, and therefor confuse the living hell out of yourself and other people. I have always found that a name change CAN be symbolic, but have always felt that its more important to change what that name MEANS, what people think when they think of that name, than it is to change the name. You arn't your name to yourself, but in a lot of ways, you are to other people, changing that name doesn't do much of anything, in the end.

As for my name, I have gone by Kell for... 12 years now, so consistently that I had a couple teachers in high school using it and parts of my family, all my friends. It has a lot of history behind it for me, and a lot of pride... I couldn't imagine changing my name, I'm as much Kell as I am Reid Wallace, for better or worse.

Drake Wingfire

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD AVOID ANIME NAMES!  XD *cough*

Ya know whats funny, I know a good handful of furs who got their names VIA products of their favorite hobbies and interests IE: car, paintball, computer part names, a interesting place to draw from but I have seen some interesting things out of there. Me personally I came up with my name.. god 9 years ago this month and that was only a sorta heat of the moment name that stuck. Pretty much I went for a simple rather common dragon name, Drake, as I hated over xomplex and hard to pronounce names XD and the dragon last name, Wingfire, is based solely off my appearance (the yellow and red wings with an orange fade, a somewhat fiery look lol) in retrospect my name sounds like something Hanna Barbera or Dr Seuss would come up with XD *chuckles*

Pentara

The name that I currently use right now came about in two parts. First, it was just Shinigami. I was a Gundam Wing fan when I was younger, and still am, and Death Scythe was one of my favorite gundams... Sandrock being the other. However, I soon discovered that any sight I wanted to sign up for, already had somebody registered as "Shinigami". So in order to be able to use Shinigami, I tacked on Kitsune to the end of it. It's worked for more places, though there are some that wont allow it, because it's too long. For those places I end up either using ShinigamiFox or DeathFox. I had decided on Kitsune, because of the way it sounded when I said it all together. To me, it just sort of rolls off the tongue.

Silvermink

I've used Silvermink since 1998 or so. The origin is obvious, I hope. :)

StickyTheDragon

"Sticky" was the name of my main character in a short story series I wrote several years ago. Everybody in that world are stickmen (I like my stickmen), so his name was "Sticky the Stickman". Very memorable. My English teacher still names all of the stickmen she draws for language classes Sticky and she knows it makes me happy. When I was choosing a sona name, Sticky came to me almost immediately. It sounds sexual, but when I tell the story behind it, you think "Aww, that's so innocent".

I wouldn't suggest looking back into your childhood for a name if your trying to renew yourself, but I think something that means a lot to you is a good idea. Writing is very important to me, and Sticky made me realize my hidden passion, so he holds a very high spot in my mind. It seemed fitting to name my sona after him.

WOW I just talked about myself way too much! X.=.X

Hadlock

I've used Hadlock since grade 8  :P

its actually originated from my homeroom teacher, he was east Indian and had a very strong accent. It was the last week of school and we were doing our locker clean ups.  I lost the lock to my locker, so then he asked me where it was and i said, "well...i had one..."  then he replyed  "you Had lock?". hehe :P

also dont put Shadow in your name... been done a million times

Zen

I have, and have had, various identities that have migrated over the years.  I take forever to choose a new name, normally, as I take great pride in putting meaning to the handles I use.  Still, changing them is such a pain, but as I've aged I've found that some don't fit, or are just too common place to be as unique as I want.  I often have short and long forms for all my handles just to handle the "unqiue" issue when registering for things.

Really it's a lot of work to change, but if you feel it necessary, just work at it slowly, start using a new handle for new things, then slowly convert the old ones you can.  No point in closing old accounts just for a name ... but if you want to be found, it's always good to let people know you are changing.
