lol my mom flipped out on me earlier... apparently me having guys as friends is a big threat to her and she disapproves of me having any contact with guys whatsoever, without thinking I'm going to have sex with them all.. x'D oh man, she really needs to take a chill pill.... *facepalms*

Starting to find that my glasses are very badly out of date. I distinctly remember my vision being just as bad as when I first started wearing them, while wearing them now, and bad to the point where I can't read the alarm clock across the room without them at all nowadays. Bugger. Can't presently afford to replace them, either. *grmbl*

Selkit: ClearlyContact.ca is pretty affordable. If you just get their basic lenses, all you have to pay for is the frames, which they sell for a good price. You'd have to go to your optometrist and pay for a new eye exam though.

Selkit

Yeah, that's part of the problem, Zenia. Being astigmatic, and with my left eye slightly worse than my right, glasses tend to be fairly expensive for me anyways.

No matter how well I sell myself for a job I can never seem to win out because I am competing with either older people with tons of experience soaking up all the student jobs... or 17yr old girls who employers know they can make work for table scrap wages >.=.<

Since my parents are going through a bitter divorce the house I am in is already on the market and I got to "vacate" before the end of June, with no job and dwindling cash reserves.

I could go on, but all I can say is... If potential employers do not get back to me I might just be forced to leave BC as the island is just like its population in terms of housing and work, outdated, on life support and slowly dying.

are you asking for more than minimum wage for a student job? because you probably shouldn't be.

Given that the minimum wage in BC is a miserable excuse for compensation for ANY kind of job, asking for a little more isn't really unreasonable.
Contrary to popular belief, popular belief is not an opinion.
"Newton was not the first of the age of reason, he was the last of the magicians." - John Maynard Keynes
"My business is to teach my aspirations to conform themselves to fact, not to try and make facts harmonize with my aspirations." - Thomas Huxley

Regardless, they are more likely to hire the person who asks for minimum wage than the person who asks for more. The minimum wage went up recently and will go up again twice by may of next year, so its not so bad...

This x200.

"Not so bad"? Are you out of your mind? The average rent in Van is ~$1200. Out in Surrey, unless you want to live in one of those fiber-board townhouses/fire traps along with a few thousand non-rent-paying bedbugs, it's still $1000 for a decent two-bed strata apartment. BC has the lowest minimum wage in Canada, even with the increase taken into effect.

Sevrin

yeah but it'll go up to $9.50 soonish and honestly, rent isn't THAT bad, I mean if you get roommates or a single room in somebody's basement its like $400, if you are working full time at $8.75 you make about $1300 or so a month after taxes, I'm living on less than $900 a month and I manage to have a fair deal of free spending money AND I'm saving to go to rainfurrest... as long as you aren't living with children or other dependents I think the current minimum wage is definitely adequate.

Selkit

You are entirely missing the point, Sevrin. It's intended to be a living wage minimum-marker. IE: Not just for people who live with room-mates, no children and no real social obligations, no car, nothing. Yes, minimum wage is livable. If you have no car, no children, no schooling obligations, and nothing binding you? Sure, minimum wage is livable on full time hours. Otherwise? You're fucked at just minimum.
