Hi.
Hello there,

It's been about six years since I've actively participated on any kind of online forum so this should be fun.

Originally from Ontario I'm a fourth year media student at Emily Carr University of Art + Design and I've been living in Vancouver for almost five years now. I'm a fairly active individual and can be found practicing swordplay at Academie Duello downtown more often than not. I enjoy traveling whenever I can, meeting new people, and appreciating any and everything nerdy in life. DFTBA for those in the know and those who are not.

I've pretty much been a closet fur for the past 12 years or so and this is the first time I've personally tried making contact with other people in the fandom let alone local people so hopefully this doesn't come across as awkwardly as I think it is.

Aside from wanting to make some new friends with what appears to be a pretty cool crowd of people who share my furry interests, I must reveal an ulterior motive for wanting to finally make contact from the depths of my closet. *gasp*

I'm in the process of trying to write an academic paper exploring why some people seek a sense of "other" apart from who and/or what they are by using feminist, queer, and trans theory to critically discuss the topic. It contains a lot of ideas that I've been trying to critically process and put into words as to why people, including myself, seek out and/or identify with a sense of "otherness". Though this may not apply to everyone here I feel some of you might be able to relate and, if you were interested, help provide some much needed feed back. My fear is that my logic is shoddy or that I'm making problematic arguments so criticism is welcome. I'll be posing some questions to the forums shortly (hopefully on the right boards) and I'll post the draft paper itself up on the writers board, but I figured it would be rude to not introduce myself first.

Anyways thanks for reading and I look forward to perhaps meeting some of you in person soon.

Best wishes,
BadWolf

Welcome to our community *paw waves*

I hope we can provide some insight from your furry community close to home in your studies. It is always interesting when the fandom has such interpretations written about them, I cannot say I agree with what I often see, but I suppose we are all unique in how we started.

Hey there, welcome to the forums!

Regarding your WIP project at hand, this reminds me that I'm going to be attending a sociology course next term on aspects of LGBTQ.

As do I! Hopefully the finished paper will be something people can at least appreciate if not wholly agree with. My digging for reference material has shown that writings on the topic can have some very mixed or harsh reviews by people in the fandom.

I've found feminist, queer and trans readings to be the most appealing if not practical to work with for exploring the topic. Quite a few trans and gender focused readings in particular I find could just as easily be talking about furries, therians, otherkin or anyone really who has felt out of sorts with their given identity or body. If you ever need someone to bounce ideas off of for your course I would be happy to act as sounding board.
