If you want a really good Survival Horror game, get Afraid of Monsters: Directors Cut. It's an old Half-Life mod, and it reminds you of just how scary the old half-life engine could be!

YES! This is one of the most frightening things I have played, and I would highly recommend it to all survival-horror fans!  ;D

I'm shamed to say I have never been past the hospital level! Freaks me out worse than Amnesia does.

Oh god SS2. Oh the (partially repressed) memories...

Is there a version that runs on source? I only have Half Life 2 :C

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned the Fatal Frame (Project Zero) series. Fight for your life against vengeful spirits with only a camera. Scares abound!

Agreed. I find transparent ghosts and spirits more frightening than physical monsters.

Unfortunately no, the game runs on the old HL engine, not on source. :C

I'm finding Alan Wake to be pretty good, its all about being scary and not so much about the combat. about 40% of the fights can be avoided by running into a light, and the poltergeists are scary but fun to deal with. By far I think its the best survival Horror since 2010, it took a step back to why fans liked the genre in the PS1 days.

Save your bullets and play on hardest my friends.

Mmmm I love that game~ It was very atmospheric throughout, but the only part of the game that scared me really was the beginning, when you have NO idea what the hell is going on. Still a great game though<3 They had a great formula for atmospheric horror and it just worked so well.

Alan Wake was amazing yet so underrated, a lot of it's sales figures were due to a poorly timed release date (alongside Red Dead Redemption).

The game's atmosphere was tremendous, and the story telling was very well done. I myself would recommend it to those looking for a different horror experience, by way of the game being able to convey such tension without resorting to buckets of blood. Such is a feature that is largely unheard of in the survival horror genre as of late.

If your looking for Stephen King in game format, then this is your game.

Kai

Resident Evil 4.

You may feel free to shoot me. :P But that game is awesome.

...Would Killer7 count?

Res E 4 was epic, half survival horror, half action game. good in its own right, but strayed from the roots of what made the series so popular in the first place. last good Resident Evil game, RE5 is not scary at all.

RE5 is not only not scary at all, it has the shittiest, most contrived story I've ever seen from any of the games. Yeah, the plot for the first game was cheesey as hell (mainly due to the voice acting and english script) But the game still was built to have tension. RE5 was...well...punching boulders...with your bare hands...yeah...I think that about sums the game up

Arrea

It was mentioned earlier, but Clocktower for the SNES...
Oh god, that scared me sooo much @.@
They got the mood and the tension just right >.<
I don't think I ever beat it with a good ending~ X3

And the other Clocktowers are pretty good too~ :3
For PS1 and the like~ X3

But yeah, I'd recommend taking a look at Clocktower with an emulator or something~ :3
Thank you for taking the time to read my post~

I love Clock Tower!!!!! Such a classic~!
