The following concerns anyone local to me. If you know anyone in the Surrey/Vancouver/Abbotsford area in Canada BC, please direct them to this if they are interested in helping out.

------------------------

Some of you have met my rats, and my parrots. Well, as life gets harder, I can barely feed myself let alone all of them. And trying to find a new place to live makes it harder too. And I need to do what I can for them. Up until a short time ago I have been able to provide them with EVERYTHING they need. And now life has changed. Something NO ONE can stop from happening. I am able to take care of all of my animals except Haku. But finances have gotten so bad, and having my mental and physical problems getting worse, I am finding myself in a harder situation.

Before any of you freak out at me, my life has turned upside down. I love them all. They are my babies not my pets. They are my children. And like some parents that can not provide for their children, I need to find some of them a better home. Except for my mentally challenged bird, I am mentally able to take care of my other babies. I am a responsible person, I know what my limits are, and I never take on more than I can handle. And if something happens to make me unable to handle a situation, I am MATURE ENOUGH TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT. Instead of keeping things I cannot afford, or am mentally able to take care of, I am doing what is best for THEM. If you have a problem with it, keep your comments to yourself. I am doing what any responsible person would do. And as far as the cat and ferrets, they are NOT MINE. They are my mothers. She just keeps them for ornamental reasons and -I- was the one to convince her to get her ferrets a new home. They are unhappy and need a better home by my mom thinks they have a great home sitting in a cage, NEVER being played with even when my mom has all the time in the world and isn't even working. I had to make her cry to get her to understand how horrible and unfair it is to the ferrets. She finally realized that they need somewhere better, where they will be loved and played with. And as far as her kitten is concerned, she wants to get rid of her because she pees where it smells like pee. I would take the kitten because she has adopted me, but finding a new home with TWO cats would be hard. I don't have problems with vet fees or anything. I am capable to take care of her. But trying to find a new home for my bird yet taking in a cat is just a stupid move. My bird is cheaper to have, but I cannot MENTALLY handle him. Again, if you have an issue with me doing what is right, KEEP YOUR COMMENTS TO YOURSELF. Life changes, and for me it has changed for the worst. And instead of being like the people on welfare that start buying animals, when they can't afford them and fucking the animals over, I am AVOIDING that situation. Thank you.

I did try and give away Moro's babies except one(rats) when they were ready but no one could take them. The reason I bred her was because her sister died and she became depressed and barely ate. And introducing another female, baby or adult to an adult female is very difficult. And I didn't want to risk needing to find the new rat a home. So I bred her, and she has four beautiful babies. All of them very smart and very sweet.
As it stands now, I need to find a new home for the three females (Moro, and her two daughters Rocket and Baby Doll). They eat more food than I can give them and are much too active. The males I don't have a problem with. They have to go together and cannot be separated, and unfortunately I cannot adopt them out with their current cage. So they need a large cage, and lots of "out of cage" time. They generally run around on top of the cage and they all know their names. They love to give kisses, and love to play with your hand and be chased in their cage with a hand. They are very quick, and need lots of love. I just cannot afford to feed them, they eat five times as much as the boys, and are even more active.
I have some pictures of Moro here:

Her daughters are bred from a blue Rasputin. One is a hooded blue, the other is all blue.

There is an adoption fee.

Lots of you have met my cockatiel, Haku, at furmeets and parties at the Pound. Some of you know he is "special." But I must tell inquirers how "Special" he is. A mentally challenged bird almost never happens. It is rare. And there is no sanctuary to take care of special needs birds. Some of you know I train birds at pretty much a professional level. I have trained other people's birds as well as my own. Some of you have seen Blaze, my conure, do his tricks. But Haku, unfortunately, isn't very trainable. He is very sweet, social, and vocal. He can whistle songs, but unlike a normal cockatiel, he doesn't sing them individually. He makes up his own things, and doesn't take rewards or anything when he does something right. He outright ignores, screams, or walks the other way when he is rewarded for doing something good. Birds do tricks with positive reinforcement. And treats can vary from Praise, to petting, to their favorite treat. Haku however, will ignore everything. If he whistles Mellow Yellow right, and I try and reward him with, let's say Millet, his favorite treat, he walks away from it and does other whistles. I clicker train, to pin point the exact moment he does something right. This is an effective method for all animals. But again, Haku does not take reward. He also CANNOT, and I mean absolutely CANNOT sit on shoulders. He gets aggressive and will often bite if you try and take him off. This is the ONLY time he will EVER bite someone. He has a dominant personality. Picture this: You have a tree full of birds, and the bird at the top is in charge of every single bird in that tree. That's how he works. His cage can never sit higher than a person's head. He can never be at the same level as a person's head otherwise this dominance starts. I am personally prepared to show people how to handle Haku that are interested. He is very sweet, and doesn't bite any other time than on a shoulder. I have gotten people to put their finger at his face, and feel that he just pushes your finger with his beak. He loves attention, and cuddles. But unfortunately, with my own mental disorders, I cannot handle his... vocalizations. He can scream like mad, and does so for no reason. I have tried to find all the reasons for him to scream and tried to eliminate them. But he does it for fun. He doesn't care if he is scolded or ignored. He doesn't care if he's tired from a day of being out of his cage and wandering around. Normally this stops screaming, but not with him. He even screams in the middle of whistling - not a common thing.
If you have patience, and don't mind a little loud sounds every once in a while, he is great around kids older than 12. He loves following feet when he's on the ground, and being picked up all the time. He doesn't take baths like he should, so every other day I take him in the shower with me and put him on the shower hose. If he doesn't bathe himself (fluff up and go nuts with the water splashing on him), then I have to splash him myself. Cockatiels produce a dust, and if not bathed every few days (should be every day to other day as birds do in the wild), the dust can cause bad allergies and can even cause respiratory problems with the bird. He is not an "attached" bird. So when he leaves me, he won't sit in his cage depressed. He has not found or recognized me as a mate like my other bird has. So finding a home for him to adjust to will be easy for him and not be strenuous. Again, I am more than willing to teach all about my training, and how to take care of him, and answer questions, and talk about certain behaviors he displays and what they mean. I NEED to get him a good home. I have been trying for over a year. And since Craigslist no longer allows me to even look for potential new mommies or daddies, I cannot go there anymore.

If my female rats find a home before he does, he will come with a cage and his favorite toys. If you are a new bird owner, (aka never had one) then I will be willing to teach you how to take care of him. I do prefer someone with experience because he is SPECIAL NEEDS. He is a wonderful yellow-face cockatiel, and needs a wonderful, loving home.

(For those that know of Grey Haven, they are full, and it is no place for a bird to go to because of the stress it causes until the rescue can find homes for the bird. Last I heard they had over 8000 birds needing homes and most are out on foster care. This is more damaging than good because birds get extremely attached. And moving from not just one home, not just two, but to a third home through fostering is very stressful and most birds never recover. They recommended to me to find a home for my bird myself instead of giving him to them because of these problems. If you are in my local area and want a bird, try contacting them for a bird. They will find your perfect match too.)

My mom is looking to find her Ferrets and her Kitten a new home.

She has two ferrets, one male, one female. Both are fixed, and de-scented. She is looking to send them to a new home, in their traveling cage, possibly free of charge. The female is white, and the male is sable(?). She doesn't have time for them, and they end up most of their time sitting in their cage. She will also send them home with ferretvite and probably some food. She wants experienced Ferret owners. If you are interested, let me know and I will let her know. They need new homes badly. They must go together as well. The female's name is Princess and the male never got a proper name. He is very rough and aggressive. My mom calls him "Little S$!t" cause he acts like one. Even with proper training as a baby, he never listened. He runs into walls too...yeah... something's not right with him....

She is also looking to give away the kitten I bought for her because she pees outside the litter box when it's too dirty. Or when another spot smells like pee. (ALL cats do this, even mine has done it). And she refuses to deal with it. She has tried to dump the cat on me. She told me either the cat is mine, or it goes to the pound. And I can't afford another cat. She loves me, she sleeps with me, she sleeps in my lap while I draw. She is very attached to me and I don't want to see her go to a pound. I need to know if anyone out there can take her. She is spayed, and is only 6 months old. She was spayed when she was 8 weeks by the rescue she was at. My mom's former cat that now lives in my brothers room is responsible for things smelling like urine. And she cannot get rid of it because it has even ruined the hardwood floors. I would take her if I could. Her name is Blossom. We didn't name her, the shelter did. And she doesn't come to that name either. She is high-spirited. And she plays fetch. She will make anything a toy, even your ankles! She is a doll, and flops when you pick her up. She has been good tempered since she was a baby. She is water-bottle trained (meaning you shake a spray bottle and she knows to run or leave something alone). She loves other cats, she adores my cat Samson, and he adores her. They sleep together all the time. She is "Black" (technically dark brown with black spots and stripes, gotta get her in the right light). She does have her vet papers and stuff. She doesn't have her second shot and so should not be let outside. If you are interested, again, please let me know.

Blossom 1
Blossom 2

This is very hard for me to do, so please, show your support even if you're not interested in them. I have cried many times already. My animals are not pets, they are my children. So letting them go is the hardest thing I have to do. I know many, many of you know my feelings. And some of you have kids of your own and know what it would be like to have to give them up. Especially after you have cared for them, watched them grow, and know everything about them and their personalities.

IF ANYONE WANTS TO HELP BUT CANNOT ADOPT, IT WOULD HELP IF YOU COULD SPREAD THE WORD IN JOURNALS, ON FA, ANYWHERE YOU CAN TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY.

Why a Re-Homing or Adoption Fee is Necessary for Pet Adoptions

There are a lot of websites that let people post ads for pets they're trying to re-home. For whatever reason, these people are no longer able to care for their pets or are no longer willing to keep them and must find them new homes. Spend some time browsing these ads and you'll see that most people will ask for an adoption fee - and that just doesn't sit right for some of the prospective new families!

However, offering a pet "free to a good home", even with good intentions, is not the right thing to do when rehoming a pet. And for people looking to adopt a new pet, there are many reasons why a rehoming fee should be charged for the best interests of the pet.

Arguments Against an Adoption Fee

"If you're just going to put your pet down or bring it to the shelter, why would you charge someone a fee to take it home? You'd rather see your pet die than give it away free?"

This comment, or some variation of it, is often seen on forums that allow pet ads. The reasoning is that the pet is no longer wanted, so why not give it to someone who does want it and would give it a good home?

Many people feel that it's unethical to charge an adoption fee for an animal that's homeless (or soon to be homeless). The fee implies that the person is "in it for the money", rather than being concerned that his pet goes to the best possible home.

"That's not an adoption fee, you're selling your pet!"

Another common concern is a "high" adoption fee. Some people believe that a small fee of $20 or $50 is more acceptable than one that's $200, for example. The higher the fee, the more likely readers are to believe that the person re-homing the pet is trying to make a profit - something that is often frowned upon, especially when it appears to be at the expense of the animal's true well-being.

Reasons FOR Charging an Adoption Fee

Most people are decent people. The sad reality though, is that some people are not - and charging an adoption fee helps to protect animals who need re-homing.

Here's an example... it's no secret that labs experiment on animals. It's also no secret that dog fighting rings still exist today, and use animals as "bait" to train their fighting dogs. Giving away a free animal makes them easy targets for this type of situation, where the animal's life has no monetary value. If you charge an adoption fee, it's less likely that someone will be able to turn around and sell the dog to a lab or as bait. It's less likely that it will be profitable for them, so they just won't bother.

Pet ownership is a privilege and requires a committed owner
. "Free to a good home" ads encourage casual pet owners who don't take it seriously. Free pets can also end up abandoned, turned into animal shelters, neglected and ignored, re-sold to anyone who happens to walk by with a few bucks, or used for breeding if it hasn't already been spayed or neutered. There are many people who don't value what they get for free.

Sometimes you'll hear outcry that adoption fees discriminate against poor families who don't necessarily have the money to pay the adoption fee, but who will do whatever is necessary to make sure their new pet is happy and healthy - including bringing the pet in for medical care whenever it's needed. It's true, families from all economic backgrounds are completely devoted to their pets and will care for them properly and with love.

Unfortunately, a free pet is often considered a disposable pet.

It is a devastating experience to have to give up a pet. In a perfect world, pets would have permanent homes. And of course, the goal is to try to make sure pets have loving and permanent homes! But sometimes life circumstances mean that a family can no longer care for its pets. Think of a family who is dealing with a severe or even terminal illness, and no longer has the time to give a pet the attention it deserves. That is only one example.

For families that are in this unfortunate situation, a meeting with a prospective new home and a couple of conversations helps to ease their minds that their pets are going to a good home - but they'll probably still worry. Having a pet is a very big financial responsibility. Beyond the usual food, grooming, and other day-to-day expenses, there are also regular vet check-ups and vaccines... and the significantly more costly vet visits for emergencies or illness. Remember, the pet owner doesn't know the potential new family - and a new family's willingness to pay an adoption fee helps to demonstrate that they're financially able and willing to provide proper care for the pet.

What Could Adoption Fees Be Used For?

Shelters and rescue organizations always charge an adoption fee. Most people don't seem to mind, in fact, they expect it. They know that rescues need to cover operating expenses, pet care, medical bills, and so forth.

Individual pet owners who charge a rehoming fee don't necessarily use it for anything - but they might also have expenses to cover too. For example, they might include a kennel, food dishes, toys, bedding, and other pet accessories when you adopt their pet. Or maybe they want to use the fee to help cover a spay/neuter surgery before they let their pet go to a new home. Maybe the pet owner sprung an animal from the shelter because it was going to be euthanized, but they knew they couldn't keep it - so they pass on the adoption fee to the new owner once they find the pet a good, permanent home.

I honestly wish i could take some of them. The kitten makes me think of Merle. How i'd love to have another but were not allowed pets here.
I might be able to talk with him/the Landlord about it. But i still doubt. I'll see what i can do. <3

She is quiet, and very cuddly. Loves to play. She doesn't even claw at couches. She doesn't cry loudly. In fact her mews are almost silent. She doesn't shed much (I have her on a great cat food instead of the crap my mom feeds cats that causes access shedding, and skin problems, and obesity). She does like to jump on counters and tables though. But mostly to look out a window, or to play in the sink. She loves to play with water in the sink.

I might be able to contact the owners of the former Greyhaven bird sanctuary, see if they have space for a special needs cockatiel. It would not be the first special needs bird of any kind they've had before, I just don't know if they actually have a space. Still, I'm sure the owner, or some of the volunteers, would be willing to help if there is space. I used to volunteer there myself, years ago, so I know the owner and some of the special needs birds they had before.

That's okay. I don't want him going to Greyhaven. My ex GF use to volunteer there and they had to move to tswassen (sp?)and are actually fostering birds because they have no room. I have been in greyhaven before they moved because they were just down the street from where I use to live. They are nice, but I have talked to them about special needs requirements and they just shrugged and said they just try and find homes right now. My ex gf taught me about how newspapers are poisonous and what not, because of greyhaven being picky about the lining on the floors of their cages. However when I visited they were so crammed. That is NOT the life I want for Haku. I want him to go straight to a home from me. I am going to pick the new mom or dad of Haku. He is not a pet, he is my baby. I have emailed them over a year ago and they said do my best to find a home on my own because they have too many. And they had no guarantee he'd have a home - ever. And I at least can give him a better chance. They told me that through a long phone call. I asked if they knew good owners and the lady I talked to laughed. She said if they knew people that were good owners they wouldn't have the problem.
So thank you, but no thanks hon. I won't go to them.

Erf, damn. I didn't realize they were so bad off at Greyhaven. Sorry, that was about the only option I know for birds, or people who can properly care for your babies. I'll still keep an eye out and let you know if I come across any options.

Thank you hon. Yeah they are VERY bad off. I think the last time I checked they had almost 8000 birds. Most of them lovebirds, budgies, cockatiels and some other small birds. They foster out to volunteers. My ex fostered some but ended up keeping them herself. She has 5 cockatiels, 3 budgies, two love birds and a Pionus. I'm sure she has more now. But she takes good care of them and they paid for the food and stuff up until she fully adopted them. The problem with fostering is that the birds get attached and after a hard life, have to find ANOTHER home and then suffer heart ache again... I know how hard it is to find a bird a new home. It's like your wife being taken away and you're given a new one. It's stressful and many parrots don't recover from the trauma.

Any help finding a new mom or dad would help a lot hon. Thank you.

Aww, if I wasn't still living with my parents, I'd definitely take Haku, or even Rocket or Baby Doll, but I don't think my parents will be okay with it, especially since Haku might really bother my parents >: but I will keep an eye out as well, ask some of my friends and stuff. Or if I do decide to change my mind, I will let you know. : )

Star, what kind of adoption fee did you have in mind for your female rats?

The point of an adoption fee, for me anyway (my mom doesn't seem to care about her animals cause they are just things to her, things to sit around and do nothing with), is to prove the seriousness of the person interested. I have had people tell me they would buy them for snake food and I said no that they were family. I am looking for about $30 or more for them. They are clean, and will come with a water bottle but need a wheel and large cage. I will also be sending lots of litter with them. Several months worth of litter. Pine, dust free. and they have hand made hammocks they will be going with too. They are made with faux fur, I made them myself.

Well, I'll need to try and take in some extra work to spare enough for the fee, but I'd love to take them in. Sevi, Britt, Purple and Sky can tell you I love my own two girls, Diego and Ofelia, like they're my own children, and since my male, Cujo, unfortunately just passed, I do have space for some more little critters in my life. <3

If you could keep me updated on anyone else who's interested, that would be great! What with RainFurrest coming up, I'm sorta strapped for cash, but the moment I can spare the money, I'm all over this.

I totally get what you mean about family. My rats are my babies, and I love them to bits. Everything about them. It's gotten to the point where I'm more concerned about feeding them than I am about myself most days - I know that, if worst comes to worst, my mom can help me with food, but nobody but me is looking out for these little girls. When I brought them home, I made a promise to them, and to myself, to love them for life. Rats are amazing creatures - I've never met another animal, other than dogs, that return so much love.

Boo, I'm gonna make myself all sentimental. Now I need to go snuggle Di and Ofie.

I know how you feel hon. Rats can learn any trick a dog can and more. Because they can carry things with their front hands and walk. My boys are very attached to me and go nuts when I play with them. My girls love each other more than me. And Rocket is FAST... she runs out of her cage the moment it's open to explore. She loooove exploring. They all come when you make kissy noises because they want treats. They are spoiled... And my animals always get fed before I do. But it's the combination of trying to find a place that would accept 5 rats. On top of that, I usually lie and say hamsters... People freak out over a rat. Cats and dogs carry more diseases than rats and mice COMBINED. And captive bred rats are disease free (most of the time lol depends on the breeders obviously).

If someone takes them before you have the money, then I will let you know.
