I went a bit overboard. Got herald of the underworld and 2015 red/black core. A deck box and 2 packs of sleeves. Filled the entire box and got lots of fun ideas for decks.}

I'm thinking of getting into Modern. I have a decent collection of INN-RTR-THS cards I could use.

With the recent bannings there isn't really a consensus I see on what decks are good.

Option 1:
Just running some powerful creatures ie Tarmogoyf using established list. Currently combo decks are big in the format and the game may not last that long. Also those good creatures can be expensive, and while I could afford it, a ban or reprint would destroy the value.

Option 2:
Run a combo deck myself. I doubt that my INN-RTR-THS collection would provide many of the pieces, and the critical piece is usually expensive. Also combo decks tend to get affected by banning.

Option 3:
Super-fast red deck, possibly splashing black or white for discard or answers to combo decks. My current collection would provide ample cards, although some would be less than the optimal choice. I'm also aware that many decks will be prepared for decks like this and wreck the whole plan.

If you're planning on getting into modern, consider that Modern Masters 2 is coming out soon. I've heard there will be a larger print run, so I doubt it will do what the original modern masters did and raise the price of many decks. Holding off until it comes out might be a good bet.

I'm thinking of dropping out of standard myself, because when Wizards implements the new block release structure, it will be far too hard to keep up with. The prices of standard cards may go up too, depending on how draftable it will be.

If I were to get into modern, I would go for Affinity. Its a relatively cheap, competitive start to the format, and its threats are so diverse that a single banning couldn't stop it. That's me though. I'm a green player, and this deck with its synergies and beater creatures seems like my kind of style.

Pick what you are going to have the most fun with. Red is going to be fast, combo is going to be highly interactive and mentally stimulating, and a list with the high efficiency creatures like Tarmogoyf is going to feel very similar to what you would find in the current standard. Maybe brewing is your thing. Whatever you go with, remember that the focus is playing good, fun, magic.  ;D

What are your views on using Nephilim as commanders?

I have a absolutely nutty Ink Treader deck that just wipes the board with only a few dollars of rares to back it up.

RainRat

Not legal as Commanders by Rules As Written.

I might allow it in a casual game. Otherwise, I'd suggest running a 5-colour commander and using some green/black cards to tutor/retrieve it from the graveyard.

Shiro

I should probably say I don't play with the MTG rulebook in my side pocket. I play casually and for fun.

RainRat

If you could use any creature as your commander, I'd pick Pack Rat. You think you get rid of it, but it keeps coming back from the Command Zone.

Shiro

We aren't using "just any old creature" as our comander.  The nephilim are legendary creatures in definition, not by rule. To too it of they're also the only 4 colored cards that come close enough to fit as your comander.

We're not anarchists, we're casual players.

RainRat

Fair enough. Don't let me stop you.

RjPanda

Being a casual player, who builds decks for shiggs sometimes, i'v been really enjoying the newer hydras. So Stronk.

Shiro

I still have yet to actually see what they can do. All I've heard so far has been praise... but I've yet to see it stand up to the WURG HUG TEAM

Well, next time you come over with your cards i'll letchya try em on for size. :)

Shiro

Keep calm and HUG EVERYONE TO DEATH

Any EDH players? I got a Scion of the Ur Dragon deck. Five colour. You ask what my commander is? ALL THE DRAGONS.

And I am working on an Arcum Dagsson deck which is a a blue artifact deck, which can pull off some crazy combos from what I have read.

RainRat

Yeah, I've got a few Commander decks. My favorite is Lazav, Dimir Mastermind. Lots of steal and copy; it's fun because you get to play with cards you wouldn't normally, and come up with strategies on the fly, and it self-adjusts to the power level of the table.
