Harrow all! Echo here. I am a newbie, and am new to the furry concept but I have a good general understanding. I have a some super simple questions that I'd love to hear opinions on!
*Snuff snuff*

1: What is your fursona, and why/how did you end up choosing it?

2: For a new poser such as myself, what are good things to participate in around the furry community?

Just looking around for some new friends, and getting the groove of this forum thingy. I am normally a very outgoing person, but recently I have been a little shy jumping into these new group things. New things scare me I guess? *Ear flop*

as to the first question = it turned out i always was a rabbit, just did not consciously know till 3 yrs ago.

and to your second question =check the events list and the calendar for things to go to, and just show up, most everyone is easy to get along with.
you should join the "Ethereal friends of professor whovianart" on facebook, if anything, to find out where i currently am, or will be.

Welcome! And everyone's opinions will vary very differently.

1. My fursona is a hybrid feline, genetically altered. I've been a cat since I was little. I created my sona when I was 13, and not until I was about 19 did I know what to call myself - a furry. Most people pick their fursona from their own behaviours. How they act. Many people have an animal or two they are MOST like. Then there are others that just pick a fursona to be "in" with the furries. And don't actually think much about it. Then there are others that just pick their favourite animal. It varies.

2. Checking the calendar for events is a good way, and messaging people with questions is another good way. Most will be happy to answer questions for you.

The furry community can be pretty tight nit, but very open and welcoming to those wanting to discover themselves and figure out if they are a furry or not.

(I use the term community personally, and not fandom as that meaning - to me - is tossed around far too loosely. As fandom is to be a fan of something. A fan of books by certain authors or a fan of a baseball team, etc. I don't like using the term fandom except for those that literally just make a sona to be "in" with the furries. I have met many of these people. They think it's "cool" to do what we are doing. But for me it's actually very personal. I am a furry. If I could change my appearance I would. ((also why many try and wear fursuits)). For some it's just in good fun. For others it's their identity. Figuring out who you are is a long, complicated process. But I've come to find there are many supportive furries. If you find you aren't a fur, but want to be part of the community, most accept that as well. Don't let people get you down by going "eeew human" or what not. I've seen my share of that and comforted many people. Anyway! I ranted a bit!  :-3)

Hope this helps in any way! Everyone is different and sees the community and/or fandom differently. So figuring it out is the first step ^^

Thankyou for that rant :D It really helped me understand things a bit. I'm sure I'll get in the swing of things soon enough  :3

+ I feel the same way about my sona as you do actually, I'm happy I think of it the same general way as some do!

1: What is your fursona, and why/how did you end up choosing it?
The roots of my 'sona were from 6-7 when I'd imagine a ghostly wolf follow me. Go on a car trip and he was running beside us. Day dreaming at school, he was out the window. At the park alone, he was there. At 8, trouble at school was catching up to me. Kids became more brutal, Teachers started having opinions of my behavior, I was always outed as bad even though I was the victim. I wanted it to stop. I wanted to be a Hitman. So I adopted a ferocious beast into my life. A werewolf. I fantasied everyday of being a werewolf. I'd claw and bite at my skin to imitate a wolf attack. I dreamed about getting ripped apart to near death to comeback as a ferocious being. I cried because every year I would tell myself that next year the pack is going to come take me away from my staged family and accept me into there pack, but it never happened. Eventually the let downs became less burdening, but that's just part of growing up. The wolf did not leave me
though. I kept the familiar around me and though recent things have changed my perception I still believe it is with me.

You want a coffee? I'll buy you a coffee. We can meet somewhere.
Don't expect to goto an event and be happy go lucky. The event may be fine but you can never know when someone is going to ruin the whole thing with there lack of respect or morality but then you get to know the people you want and don't want to hang with. But it's still not a good story to tell your bros.

1: I just am a bear. I don't remember a time that I didn't kind of feel like one. From the time I first learned about them I felt like I should have belonged with them and that my humanity was a cosmic clerical error. I still can't fully, and logically, deconstruct the reasoning behind it. But then again i suppose that internal conflict is common amongst many of us.

2: The best way I could recommend to meet other furs on this forum is to post your interests and hobbies. See if you can't peak the interest of someone similar to you.

My fursona is a gryphon. I chose a gryphon simply because I really like how they look and how there are very few gryphons that I've seen in the fandom.

2: For a new poser such as myself, what are good things to participate in around the furry community?

Joining a few furry forums and finding local furry events are all I can really think of. Once you get to know a few people you could also get a group together and go to conventions.

plus there are the monthly dinner meets and of course starwonders weekender get together's and Gizmo's potlucks over the winter or camping in the summer held once a month.

1: What is your fursona, and why/how did you end up choosing it?

I am a dragon, and I'm quite simple as far as dragons go. I don't breathe fire, I don't do magick, and I most certainly don't sit on top of a pile of gold or I'd have a newer car and own a house by now. =P I didn't really end up choosing it as much as it chose me. I've always loved scaly things and I just thought they looked friggin' cool. Eventually, I started taking it to heart in a more spiritual sort of way, and it kinda stuck. Also helps that I have a little bit of talent as an artist and was able to develop my 'sona and my feelings for him by drawing it out on paper or the computer. It started out as a heartfelt feeling that a dragon was my thing, and it remains the same feeling to this day.

Depending on what your interests are, there are many avenues you can pursue to get to know people here. As far as events go, a lot of newbies are encouraged to go to the monthly fursuit bowling events since it's a generally calm, welcoming environment where lots of people from the various social groups around here go to mingle and just chill out. You don't even have to bowl; you can hang out in the restaurant area which the alley reserves for us every time.

Seeing that you're an artist, you might be interested in looking through the events boards for art-jams. All of the artists I know around here are really cool people who just like to draw. No judgment, no criticism (unless you ask for it), and usually nice quiet nights of sitting around watching TV shows and doodling.

There are other events that are a little more hardcore into the partying, drinking, dancing scene, and those can be fun to attend if you know what you're getting into. You can ALWAYS ask an event host, or people attending, in his/her posting what kind of environment is to be expected at their parties and get-togethers. Most of the people here are pretty friendly and accommodating. =)

1: What is your fursona, and why/how did you end up choosing it?

My fursona Is a Lion. I believe we all have a guardian animal we live by and i grew having a passion for lions as my grandfather did also. He raised me as i had no farther and now I'm a grown man I naturally take leading roles. Enjoys responsibility and providing for others. just as a Lion would for his Pride.

2: For a new poser such as myself, what are good things to participate in around the furry community?

All depends on you as an individual. For me i seek out outgoing folk who i go on a night in the town with. or a few drinks n laughs round the house. Im not much of a gamer so i  don't get involved with anything that involves games especially these card games its just not my cup of tea. so i guess i don't really look for the activity's i just look for the friends and more then arrange nights out with. You get to do exactly what's within your interest then

1: My fursona, for whatever reason I can't comprehend is a golden langur. I've given up analysing why I've gravitated to certain animals in the past (I'm one of those people who's had different fursonas over their lives, and still hold all of them kind of in the back of my head), other than, hell, they're cool.

2: Go to stuff! Different stuff! Go to Howloween! Tuesday Sushi! Bowling! Camping trips! Hikes! We have a ridiculous amount of events and gatherings every month, and NEVER be afraid to say hi, to anyone. Introduce yourself! We all have a lot of common interests beyond furrydom. Relax! No one is gonna chew you out.

1.
I am a black and red Kodkod - a small South American cat. I chose this because I knew I wanted to be a cat, but I was unsure of the species, then, while watching a documentary with a friend I saw a Kodkod and was like YES, THIS! I chose the colors black and red mostly because I just happen to like them. I later associated my fursona with fire, partly because the colors match and partly because I have kind of a fascination with fire.

2.
The Dinnermeets are a great place to meet new furs, they are usually 10-15 if you don't want too large a group, and good for getting to know people better because its usually a more or less quiet environment (being in a restaurant) also there has been many a fur who started off with the Tuesday sushi meets.
Definitely the conventions, though it's generally a good idea to know one or two people before you show up at one (or you might find yourself kind of out of place) Rainfurrest down in Seattle is happening this month, also there's Howloween coming up soon.

Kai-Wolf

Hello! And welcome to the BC furries group... although I'm new here too!

My species is a wolf. Specifically, the subspecies of grey wolf that exists on the BC coastline. They like to swim between oceanic islands and eat salmon.

My fursona has a quite deep significance to me, as it would seem for several others on this thread as well (I love talking about this stuff, by the way)! I knew I was a wolf since age 10 or so, but felt I was "like an animal" for plenty longer than that. Still am not quite sure why I ended up as a wolf, since I don't think I even saw one in real life as a kid. But one night it just hit me... and been wolfy ever since  :P  (although I didn't discover the furry fandom until I was 17.)

I know wolves are an incredibly common species in the furry fandom, but they seem to be a natural fit for me. Pack mentality, hunting behaviours, loyalty to companions, and being clumsy and obsessed with toys... definitely not the mystical T-shirt stuff though XD

As for your second question, I think I will refrain from answering. In fact, I'm just going to read all the responses YOU get, so that I can learn the answers, myself :D
