Turns out he really is passionate about dragons. Absolutely adores them. I told him there's a community for that, but he didn't understand the concept.

What is the best way to explain the concept of the furry fandom without sounding insane?

Mosesj

Tell him there's a fandom, like star trek or my little pony, aimed around humanoid animals and dragons, full of a variety of people with different interests, with conventions and furmeets around the world.

Then bring him to a local furmeet

Cassiden

That's pretty much what got me into the fandom, I was just a bloke who was obsessed with dragons.

Rushlight

Startrek is what got me in. There are a number of anthro races
(4 feline, 3 canine, 6 reptid to my count so far).

You can't really 'convert' someone unless they already have the predisposition to it.
all you can do is show it to them, and explain that there are alot of really fucked up people spo don't go digging alone.
otherwise he'll find e621 and its GG.
I hate being human, I hate being alone, but I scare off or pushy away anyone who cares or understands.

Haha, yeah he found that site already, long time ago.

I just figured it was a matter of time before he succumbs to the disease.

SHOW HIM THE ART, DAMMIT

Holy crap if he likes dragons, go to FurAffinity and pull up (clean) artists like Sixthleafclover, Adalfyre, Leilryu, Zarathus, Beastofoblivion, Drakhenliche, Gallivant_Crow, Abelphee... hell I could fill an entire page with amazing artists who are almost exclusive to drawing dragons. Make sure he sees the site as a guest, or makes his own account so he can do his own browsing.

Also: don't just click your FA bookmark and bring it up. He'll know you frequent the place. Google search Adalfyre or something like that and click their FA page when it comes up. Don't want him asking why you have that site on permanent standby.

Just tell him, "Oh, you like dragons? I happened across this site a few years back that had a lot of artists who drew them, check it out!"

After that, wait and see where he takes it. You've just dropped him into furry central, and if he sticks around long enough to make an account and add favourites, there's a pretty damn good chance he's gonna fall right in and make his own character.

Bam. You've just created a furry. How godly do YOU feel? XD

Call me Naetholix, Neox, Neo or Steve, I respond to all of them. =)

If he takes furrys negatively, don't get offended, and don't force him into it. I can see how being a furry is unappealing for outsiders. Just show the good, non-creepy aspects of it, and work your way up from there.

Be upfront with him about the various aspects of the subculture. There's beautiful art, kick-ass costumes, and lots of awesome conventions, camps, and meets. There is also drama, and kink, and some really oddball shit (Google doesn't have a filter).

Just like any other subculture, there's a spectrum, and you don't have to accept all of it to take on the label or to consider yourself a fur. Just like others have said, let him get into it naturally and of his own accord. Just provide the basis and stand back. You might have a massive closet-fur case on your hands, or he might think we're all freaks.

All part of the process, really.  :birdy:

i'm on a really weird fence regarding this. on one hand, cool! he might find a new fandom he's looking for! but, just maybe, forcing a fandom on somebody isnt the best way to do it? i was actually driven -away- from a fanbase as of pate because of some overly die-hard fans who would not take no for an answer.

tl;dr just do it with a grain or two of salt. do not meddle in the affairs of dragon(fans .) :p
Prinnies, dood!
