Since I have had a bit more time now, I read the article.

Hm...it just so happens that I'm dropping by Tokyo for a little while this summer...I'll do well to check out the Shibuya district or something.

I REALLY hope it doesn't become a (sorry for the hipsterism) "mainstream" thing, generally when something becomes popular it gets ruined

I heard such account about a decade ago of having a tail crafted, it was discussed in a few otherkin communities as well.

What would be bad of having the furry accessories expanding outside of its community? You would get recognition and acknowledgement. Or should we keep this only within our own community?
Though the argument that everything that becomes mainstream gets ruined at one point or the other is a valid argument and fact.

It's of little surprise that such fashion statements get developed in Japan, a country which explores with cute and adorable features.

As much as I am against this becoming a mainstream fashion accessory, it would be better if other wore them to as then wearing tail would be like holding a neon sign saying "I'm a furry" which could have undesirable result namely persecution from people who feel the need to express their opinion in a less than civil manner.

Having something become mainstream doesn't necessarily mean that it is ruined, it just loses it's original purpose of expressing our own style to something that we need to get because everyone has one. While for the average person it might just seen as a fad, to people that know the person it would have a different meaning, but the originality is dead.
I've always been told to never look a life behind a window to go outside and join the world, but what about the world behind that window makes the outside so much better?
