A lot of the terminology for them is confusing to me, but again this is part of my costume idea, I'd need a speaker that isn't too big (mini/micro speaker), that'd fit into the head of a fursuit, maybe the mouth/jaw.

Just curious what sort of things I should watch out for, and what might be too loud/too quiet volume output of a speaker.

A set of portable laptop speakers would work, and they have common 1/8" plugs. Either that or find an adapter for a PC speaker.

Unfortunately those might be a little too bulky to manage in a fursuit head, but thank you Zen.

how about a set of over the ear headphone speakers.  the big ear muff looking things from the 60's style.  you could cone your ears and mount the speakers at the base of the ears and then the ears will direct the sound more in the direction you want it to go.  check out those new "ears" for an iphone.

KermodeJay got this thing for his b-day where you attach to something (sticks) and it sends vibration into it and sound amplified like the body of a car. so ask him :3

These are a pair of laptop speakers that are rather small and have very nice sound, as well as being USB chargeable with a decent battery life!

These are available in the source I have them and love them! They are called Sonic Shark, made by Headrush.

Edit: These are nice and small as well as battery powered, and they take a standard audio jack, they seem like they might fit into your needs well!
