I hate MMORPGs (Kind of a rant)

I have yet to see a single MMORPG that can actually stay playable after you reached max level.  At that point, you've beaten the game and lets say you got the best gear.  Then what?  Run around and pvp to get your honour or whatever up?  Boring as hell.  Oh and about D&D online.  Sure it seems great, until you discover there are only two cities.  It would be nice if it branched out a bit since it is using the Ebberon world from D&D.  Maybe go read the actual adventure books and incorperate some of that into the game rather than a crapload of "go in the sewer and kill" dungeons.  So sick of just killing stuff in the sewers.  MMORPGs just are not that appealing because once you get to the end, then what?  Some people argue that it's all about the community and making friends.  Yeah okay then, but if I wanted that, why don't I just go on IRC or join a forum...like this one!  Hey, I found a community that's not retarded right here!  Bloody hate MMORPG "communities."

Maplestory is playable when you reach max level. If you wanna boost your fame, gather rare/expensive items for your lower characters on the same server, earn money, get lower characters to pay you to leech exp off of you in a party, finish your quests, earn medals, etc. Can't gain experience from killing monsters yourself, but there's still plenty to do. Or attempt to kill the hardest boss which is currently undefeated for the time being,

I have personal reasons for not liking Maple Story. >.>

I think some MMORPGs want to believe they can be something like Second Life on the side - okay, you've reached max level, but you'll still pay and log in so you can 'hang out' with your friends and RP (ha!  Hahaha.  WoW's RP-servers are a joooke - good luck there) and that sort of thing.  But... you're paying for something you could do on a forum or IRC or a MU* or *gasp* Second Life itself.. and without the content creation capabilities those other things offer. :p

I can see some of the heavily-themed places supporting that sort of thing, where the fan/playerbase already has a tendency to RP - typically licensed content like Star Wars/Trek, D&D, Warhammer 40K, etc. that have lots of other media tie-ins for people to go on, but Warcraft?  Guild Wars?  No offense to the story writers, but they don't appeal to people who don't already play the games, so you end up with a very game-oriented, well, game, at the end, and if there's nothing to do or kill, people get bored and quit.  :/

I play a free game, so technically I'm not wasting any money. Yay!

Global Agenda. There's some reason to playing that after you reach max level.

With FF11 there's plenty of stuff that you can(and honestly, only can) do after you hit the max level... lots of dungones and battlefields you can go to... there's even a max level xp system called Merits where you can develop your character in other ways.. and of course there's always switching jobs to one of the other 20 you haven't done so yet and starting the whole process ad nauseam...
Somedays even I don't know what I'm gonna look like.

My old roommate used to play FF11 a ton... until he had two TVs set up, one for his PS2 so he could sit looking for a group in FF11, and another TV with his Xbox 360 to play a different game on while he waited.

A few months of basically waiting for a few hours on the PS2, finally getting a group, and then not even wanting to play because he didn't feel like it at the time and going back to the Xbox go by, and he finally realizes 'wait - why am I paying to not even play this game?'... c.c

I heard they changed it recently so anyone can group with anyone, regardless of level, and get XP together, but apparently soloing anything is a joke.  I understand it's an MMO, but not everyone has time to do EVERYTHING with their friends or other people on there... I know - I used to have problems getting groups in EverQuest as well until WoW came out and gasp you could solo all the way to max level if you wanted.  With any class. :O  Sure, it would be more fun and probably much faster/easier if you did it with friends, but you weren't forced to, and I think that's something a lot of the 'hardcore' MMOs do that turn people off.

Oi, Final Fantasy 11.  That game never should have received that title.  I don't want to say it is not "part of the main game line" because there is no actual series story line but still.  It's an MMO and should have been called Final Fantasy Online and save the number for some other game.  Mainly cause I remember back in the mid 90s, square said they only wanted to make 13 final fantasy games.  But now 11 and a 14 are both MMOs with trailers that don't show how the game actually is.  It's just disappointing on an advertising level.  With Maple Story, I played it back when there were only two or three servers and they were so full of spammers that it took five full minutes to go from one end of a town to the other.  Damn spammers.  Also, my cousin is actually paying a subscription to Maple Story and I had to smack him for that one.  MMORPGs I actually enjoy would be Neverwinter Nights 1 or 2 if you can find a good server because they are essentially actual online D&D games, quite unlike D&D online.  And yes I do consider games that can hold 32 people in one server to be an MMO.  I did try guildwars but I didn't like the idea of buying so many add-ons that still wont drop in price.  Runescape is utter failure and I don't really need to go into that one.  Personally, what I would love to see is a Call of Cthulhu MMO or maybe even Shadowrun.  Yes I know there is an RPG maker MMO of Call of Cthulhu but I am not counting it.

I've never really liked the "Intensive" MMOs all that much since they all seem to suck all your time out of you while never going anywhere. I'm a casual player and so I'm drawn to free, casual games like the former Nexus War, and Dead Frontier that don't depend on you sitting in a chair all day.

I'm the guy that actually likes playing games for the experience itself, and not grinding for grinding's sake, so comparing my situation to the EVE-ers and WOW,Nerds!-People, I do think I'm better off.

Just throwing my two pence.  ;)

Honestly... after playing RPGs(video and non) like ff10, ff13, 7th Sea, Shadowrun... I'm becoming increasingly drawn to a more gradual and customizable leveling system rather than "Grind, BAM benefits, lather, rinse, repeat"  Unless the Grinding is really not that ornerous... *coughflyffandDreamofmirrorcough*  At least with the Megaten MMO.. you can actually kinda chat with demons to recruit them rather than grind all the time..

I really liked playing Star Wars the Old Republic. (kinda made me get into liking Star Wars).

I blame my friends. I'm quite enjoying dual boxing a pally/druid on WoW in my spare time now. ;p

I used to play WoW, still have an account, but it's not active. I've also played EQ1, EQ2, AO, GW, LOTR, beta tested Linage 2. MMOs are cool, but I get bored of them. Right now I am playing BFBC2 (a new FPS), love it and am in a weekly tourney for it.

I find the more I play MMOs, the more I see the artifice behind them instead of the "game" - the little things they do to keep you playing and bind you to the game so you don't feel like you can leave...
