....

Now that we got that out of the way.

I saw a message from someone saying they were leaving the furry fandom because to them being a furry means having a fursuit... and someone hacked him and blac bla bla QQ rage drama >__>

That made me wonder, what is a furry to you ?

you think its exclusively having a suit? commissioning and drawing art? getting excited over a particular type of porn? or do you have your own definition of it ?

Furry is me, not giving a damn about fitting a label as usual, only with weezil ears and a tail. :3

Fair and simple I like this lol. But my objective with this thread is to get different opinions so I can formulate a big explanation based on my own and other furries views of "what is a furry" to people who do not know what furry is and ask me. I much prefer to enlighten people so they have a positive view of what is a furry instead of finding out on their own and becoming the generic bitter trolls whose only purpose in life is to troll furries in whatever legal or illegal ways they can...  >:(

Of course I'm not running around preaching furries like a religion its just for people who ask me or people I think should know about (usually the ones who figure it out and start getting a bad image of it).

And I like knowing what other furries think about the community that way I can act more respectfully towards them and not say or do something assuming its the way every single furry does and thinks.

If one states that owning a fursuit is a requirement for being a furry, then the vast majority of people in the Fandom would not be furries.
Many furs have no intention of owning a suit. I personally don't care for fur suits and would rather interact with a person than a mute pile of fur cycling through the same poses and expressions over and over.

To me, being a furry is appreciating the fact
of animals having human characteristics.

Suit or not?

Even though I made my own fursuit, doesn't mean I made
it to complete me as a furry, I think they look like an awesome
form of art, putting character in the...character.
It's not yer content, it's how you pitch it too people

Gren

For myself, furry is having in interest in characters that have a mixture of human and animal features. Fursuits can certainly be a part of this, but are far from being required as far as I'm concerned.

Thank you for the replies! I finally got some time to sit here and write all I think of it :3

Since I joined the furries I have seen many different views and actions from others within this community.

Roleplaying: Though you don't have to be a furry to rp it seems more popular among us, some absolutely hate it though and will ask you to stop (or just straight forward tell you to go die in a fire lol) if you attempt anything with them (usually happens without knowing they dislike it).

Fursuits: Suits is something that makes the community really fun in my opinion. I met a lot of people who said suits are stupid people who wear them are fools some changed their minds after going to a convention and seeing them live, others.... hmm actually I don't recall con goers that I know of not liking suits.

Art: I seen a lot of people having a hard time admitting that furry art's majority content is of adult nature. When I joined the community it was because a fur friend straight out linked me pictures of lesbian wolves engaging in explicit intimate actions . Of course there is a lot of art that isn't explicit adult content but if you have an FA account and you post art there you know how much more popular mature content is. The 2 problems I have with this is that he effort people put on art that isn't mature doesn't get appreciated as it should and furries who insist in saying the majority of the furry community isn't interested in mature content. Again, I'm not saying 100% of the community is PORN PORN PORN but the majority, not exclusively but heavily, is.

Conventions: I have only been to 2 conventions so I'm not entirely sure what I can say about it other than its super fun...  :birdy: :birdy: :birdy:

So to me, being a furry to me is someone who enjoys* anthro characters and wishes to be one, either an existing anthro character or their own creation. Being part of the furry community is someone who enjoys* anthro characters but not necessarily see themselves as one and participate in 1 or more of the activities stated above.

*Enjoying anthro characters can mean a lot of things. Finding them cute, getting turned on by them, interest in the animal traits within a human body and so on.

Please keep in mind that all stated here has been from my own personal experience and thoughts since I joined the community and may be very different from your views which is the point of the thread!

is the majority of furry art really adult? i did'nt realise...i mean...i know it's out there, but the first furry art i ever saw was pg, and most since. then again i'm notoriously naive. and my fa/da adult filters are on lol

we are all animals, and share a connection with one another that is no small matter. if i am a furry, then it is a reflection of the way i feel this connection.
i'm not a fursuiter, and can't see myself ever getting into it, but i can see why people have fun with it, it's kinda neat ^ ^

it's not...defined...i mean, i felt this way before i realised there was a name for it...so i guess...it's a feeling more than anything...

i'm also somewhat embarrassed about it, and more than a little ashamed. i'm not about to announce to anyone i know irl that i...might be a furry. considering i'm a bit red even posting this.
so there.

being furry is NOT something to be ashamed of, I am embarrassed by the smallest things but one thing I am never embarrassed about is the fact that I am furry, I'd bet that if you told everyone you know that you're a furry they wouldn't think any less of you, I told several people and most of them were like "yeah, so?" this is vancouver and its 2011, few people judge you for things like this.
