The internets is running out of capacity!  Your computer will freeze up and stop working when we run out of internets, so be sure to stockpile as much as you can while it's plentiful!

I get what they're trying to say in this article, but whoever wrote it probably doesn't even know how to program his microwave.

Psh. People have been predicting this since, like, 1994. It has yet to happen.

Ravenwood

Of course the fact that most of the major providers haven't spent any money on upgrading capacity does lend some crenence to this story.

LOL, this doesn't make any sense!  I think YouTube, for example, can afford to buy more capacity (is GOOGLE, HELLO!!!).  Capacity is ridiculously cheap in the larger scheme of things.  If nothing else, hard drives have to be constantly replaced, and obviously replacing older hard drives with newer ones is a good opportunity for capacity increases.

Ravenwood, I don't understand, why do providers need capacity?  If shaw or telus doesn't have enough hard drive space for... for what, my e-mail?  For monitoring and tracking traffic stats?  Logging?  Come on, all these things use very little hard drive space.  Shaw and Telus, and probably all other providers, spend millions of dollars a year on infrastructure upgrades.  I'm sure if hard drives were going to be the bottle neck, they would buy new ones instead of laying new fibre cables, for example.  Unless American ISPs aren't as intelligent, lol.

You can DO that?!

Its not Hard drive space thats the issue, (please note did not read/watch? the article) but rather its the amount of data that can be transmitted down the lines, its something like the BUS on your Motherboard, its reached its absolute potential, they cant make it go any faster (im talking of course about the best out there) because essentially Physics just wont allow it.  its the same for the internet, they will need to Re-Vamp their whole system, run new lines, create better technology's to create more capacity.  As far as i know, this is the story, but please dont think im some expert, this is a small hobby, thats all, nothing more, nothing less.

This is most likely what the article was referring to, but the way it was written suggested that the internet was running out of ROOM, as if it were a big swimming pool of data somewhere and the water level was almost at the top.

It appears Fox News has changed their article to be a bit more technically apt...however, the link to the Times version is still pretty bad.

*Has read both articles now* Ok, ya its basically what i said, and really all they need to do is upgrade their lines/computers.  But really its going to be a never ending battle, well unless they solve the "Copper" issue, Aka, the fact that we have used up the potential of copper for data transfer, like i said its just as fast as it can possibly be.  Now like they said in the article about Fiber optics, that will definatly buy us some time, but soon enough it will reach capacity as well.  In all reality the only way to beat Fiber Optics, will probably be actual living tissue, woot for living computers and the day when you have to actually feed your computer, and give it flue vaccinations. heh heh heh, i love this stuff XD

I think we should petition the government for a stimulus package. We need at least 700 billion internets to maintain service at its present level, much less provide any meaningful performance and quality improvements.

But is there enough bandwidth left for them?
