Last month marked the release of the first trailer for the upcoming CGI-3D holiday spectacular, Yogi Bear.  In case you have not seen it yet, prepare yourself:

Some thoughts.

Dear God, why?

For starters, there has not been one successful Hanna-Barberra translation to film since the awful Jetsons movie (which is now being remade) begat a 20-year parade of watered down Gen-X/Millennial trites. You would think that somebody with enough clout would take one look at The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, Scooby-Doo, Garfield, Underdog, Alvin and the Chipmunks and Marmaduke, then scream bloody murder to halt this childhood-pillaging cinematic refuse from assaulting our wallets and insulting our desire for escapist entertainment.

But no; for the umpteenth time, here we go again.  The jokes are sitcom standards (unsurprisingly, all three writers on this movie are sitcom veterans).  The CGI is ok for still pictures, but horrendous whenever the bears are in motion.  The 3D appears to be an utterly useless gimmick.  Dan Ackroyd is an ok Yogi, and Justin Timberlake does a credible impression of Boo-Boo, but does anyone really care?  Do kids prefer half-hearted celebrity sound-alikes to hearing their cartoon characters that sound like they do on television?  Do young adults really need to hear one of the Blues Brothers and the guy who brought sexy back to pull them into theaters?  This could make Furry Vengeance look like Born Free

And what is with this new poster?

What the hell is that supposed to mean (other than what is swimming around inside your cranium at the moment)?  This has lulz.com and Rule 34 written all over it.

Now, if you will excuse me, I need to watch the Tron Legacy trailer again to restore my faith in cinema.

Why didn't people listen to Mr Ranger when he said Do Not Molest the Bears?  I think this movie falls into that sort of thing.

Edit:  My bad.  Don't molest the bears was from a Donald Duck cartoon called Grin and Bear It.  Still think it applies here though.

Looks like it will be terrible. I won't even waste time DLing it, nevermind spending $10 or whatever a Tuesday matinee costs on it.
