...We had a career councillor who was supposed to stop by and help ...I'm pretty sure he only showed up half a dozen times in those two years. :|

I wouldn't put much faith in the advice of a person who's career choice was a career counselor. Especially if he sucks at it. My career counselor told me I should be a doctor. (No bio courses, no interest in the medical field, pre accepted to tradeschool). Ya, do your own research and you'll be much better off.

Thats funny; when I was in highschool, there were plenty of spokesmen/girls from AI that were convincing students to join their school and pay the 40,000$+ tuition. When you're a kid, its not like MONEY is a necessity, right? Money was the last thing that the students were thinking about.
I thought I would go to AI but, meh, I rather go to school for Psychology.

Ah... I didn't know they were sending rep's to highschools now. I guess that makes sense, but it feels shady to me. Schools like AI, Vanarts, VFS etc are very good at 'selling the dream'. It's easy to make movies and videogames look cool compared to traditional academics. The price of those places are ridiculous now, and it takes years of industry experience and some solid commitment to get to decent a decent salary. Saying all that right now is a great time to be in visual effects/animation etc with all the companies that are ramping up/coming to town. I know for a fact that a ton of companies in Vancouver are struggling to fill seats. That's great for us :)

Are you at AI now or did you make the jump to Psychology?

Nice! Anyone here doing a vfx/3d program?

I'm not but I'm in game art and design and our programs cross over all the time.

How do you like it? I always found AI to be a bit of a roll of the dice with instructors and classmates so Im curious what it's like these days

I love it. I have been to quite a few schools and this is by far the best I've come across so far. My teachers have so far been pretty awesome and it definitely teaches you a lot. Also you make friends instantly with everyone in your class so that's cool too.

squashNstretch

That's awesome. Back when I was in school I was lucky to be in a friendly class. The class ahead and behind me were all pretty anti-social. None of those guys were willing to share knowledge or tricks. I'm still good buddies with a few people I graduated with. It's a good thing that you are in a social crew, Vancouver and the industry is SMALL.

That's what I hear, don't piss anyone off because chances are you'll run into them again. I think people just like me in general though, I usually get people talking.

Haha, I'm sure you'll do just fine. Maybe I'll even bump into you one day... (Well, if you ever cross that deadly gap over to live action O0

What do you mean by live action? What industry are you in?

squashNstretch

Ah, I do visual effects. I'm a 3d guy on the movies side of our business

xeneros

Ah, okay, cool. I liked the teachers I had who worked in film. My uncle works in film as well.

I wont honestly suggest you go to AI. Too many disgruntled students getting ripped off. When there are groups of students this quarter creating collaborative complaint letters to the administration about.. well MANY things. Especially considering they pretty much will ignore you when you make complaints. (a bunch of students, including myself were in an experimental class last quarter and it was a complete waste of our time. Many of us sent in formal complaints about it to the administration and they told each of us, that no one else had complained. Lovely thing about schools, word spreads. :3 We all found out they were ignoring us lol.

So i suggest grabbing input from a bunch of students or previous students before settling on a school.

Amylith

Dx that sucks I'll watch out for that then
Thanks for warning me
