Ok... I know there are a lot of you out there. I think I may have even worked with one or two of you. Vancouver has a HUGE animation industry.

Nitrogen, Mainframe, Nercorps, Bardel, Northwest... Countless video game studios. Countless animation schools. Who's out there?

nah this tail is used to that, but rather whenever I try TO get into the business, something blows up in my face. Ive decided to try and switch focus into Video production work for a while as an alternative, though i still volunteer 3d animation to various mods or friends.
Though those have ALL blown up in my face too.
All ive got anymore is some stuff ive thrown up on Vimeo, all done in Softimage|XSI

My stuff at Vimeo is all i have to show:
Lancer Web Mockup (Looped Idle + Anim with lance) never got an opportunity to render the fixed version where the arms dont flap lol
Silly Fight WIP3 Did this in 3 hours, when rendered the lighting actually took away their distinguished coloring so its hard to follow (plus the motion blur screwed up some of the cuts made IN the program)
Bear Attacks WIP3 I love working with Source, i was working on a Machinima when i got hired to work on a mod, so this never got completed past some blocking and lip synching with the Chory tool
Sonic Death WIP 3 In class competition: Famous Character Dying. I chose Sonic cause i had finally ripped the Sonic Riders mesh (3 hours)
Leo The Hitch-Hiker 2D Animation class, "Leo The Hitchhiker" mime assignment, starring Leo of VG Cats, captured with Flipbook pro
PreFinal - Much More [Rendered] did this BEFORE any 3D animation classes, was a competition for AnimClips (now defunct). Bastard admin forgot to include my entry for voting so i dont even know how it did.

Not really, the class was pretty web based and they all knew about VGCats, it wasn't until the Conversation Lip Synching assignment where i took the dialogue between Lloyd and the Austrian chick from Dumb and Dumber and put it up against Wolf and Vixen anthros respectively, that people started to click in. Then 2D Illustration came about, people got it then XD

Cool stuff dude! I knew there were other animation types around. WAY too many artists in the community to not have any other animators!
Im actually extremely passionate about Animation, and i do still want to practice the art. But im not sure if its something my life will ever allow me to do professionally. Well see though.

Glad you took the opportunity to check my stuff out. honestly i had no idea the board was going to embed those videos... jsut intended them to be links XD

A bit of a remark with Pixar opening shop here.

Its something to look forward to, but not as much as the hype that the media makes it out to be to the public IMO.

No confirmations yet, but word has it that the manpower count will not be all that high (100 or less IIRC). Most of their talent pool will not be just from Vancouver, but from all across Canada, and the directors for what they're gonna do will come directly from their main branch.

As opposed to working on animation for feature presentations, they'll be predominantly working on advertisements and whatnot. Shorts are a possibility, but relatively unlikely as well.

To the general public, its somewhat of a big news I guess, but the local talent pool should just keep their fingers crossed at best IMO

Ive heard its mostly just going to be Graphic Design with DVD/BD-Ray menus, Covers and Inserts, and Websites. So ya your basic Marketing to ease the strain off the main Pixar i guess? lol i dont know, but it sounds like a great entry level job you know?

*chuckles*

An entry level job over at Pixar would probably cause a big stir when you go to other companies in other countries to work.

Nonetheless, if the entry level job requirements are high, I'd still keep my fingers crossed, though its something to really aim for if anything =)

Looks like I mixed the word Advertising and Advertisement from my previous post, gah >_>

From the way things are going, I just hope that the industry picks up in the coming year, would give me a reason to stay here, though the market back home in South East Asia is also blooming at present, which also tempts me to go back.

All of you animators out there, or just all of you who are creative, watch this lil film..

Rathen (a.k.a. HammyToy) is a VFS graduate, and professional animator in Metro Vancouver.
He has done some work for TV.   He likes to do traditional 2-D animation.
I'm not sure if he lurks on this board, though.
