Selling apps on Google Play

Anybody figured out how to set up payments from Google for selling apps on Google Play?
I'm more than a little confused by the process.

I'd thought it was as simple as setting up a Google Checkout account (with a credit card) then creating the developer Google Play account, and payments would go through that, but now I'm not sure sure.

Has anybody figured this out before?
