From my understanding, there was only one employee responsible. Who claims that his boss told him to do it, the manager is denying the allegation that he told his worker to specifically "kill" the dogs. None of the other tour guides are taking responsibility, claiming that they were unaware what was happening at the time.

The link to the CTV news story has now been taken down, and shows a "404" error notice. No surprise there, really...silencing the media as usual.
WHAT possessed that company to kill the dogs??!!! WHY were they still operating even after previous concerns about the dogs' welfare??!!!
The economic thought patterns that cause crap like this REALLY have to be changed...

What's happening right now is the other employees who had no part in slaughter are being harassed by self proclaimed AR activists. I'm sure nobody is trying to silence the media, the press likely think this story has been out for long enough given the violent reaction of the public.

I've said and done things I regret here, so I just don't do anything instead.

Well, I am speechless on the act itself... but to answer your question on what kind of employee would carry out such orders... any employee in this day and age who's options are "listen to my bat-shit manager and still make enough money to eat" or "do the right thing and be respected yet be jobless in the tightest working market to date in my lifetime with no sympathy"

Sounds cold and I know money should never come before life, but frankly that's my guess, if they went all post traumatic stress after the fact then its a good bet they were pressured/shoved into this as some sorta "if you don't do this your fired" deal.

okay..might as well toss in my two cents ( sorry i didnt read any other replies if i sound redundant)

first and foremost: they fucked up whistler's, and subsiquently vancouver's tourist economy. The whole world now hears of whistler and thinks of dog massacres.

They should have rented and borrowed dogs from alaska and up north, and returned them come spring.

Now to play devil's advocate:

Sled dogs ARE routenely culled all over the north, as the dogs are viewed as livestock, and not pets despite the fact they are dogs, and not routine livestock animals. The ididarod is under alot of scrutiny as more often than not, several dogs each run are pushed to the point of keeling over from exhaustion. The company states they did try and rehome the pets, and then tried to hire a vetrinarian to euthanise the dogs, but the vet refused. As for the employee, there have been psychological studies showing how easy it is to pressure/persuade a normal human being into carrying out cruel and tortureous orders onto other beings. And sadly in this economy, people will get desperate if they think this is what is needed to keep thier family fed.

But the fact is that they very shoddily executed a HUGE number of perfectly healthy animals that had worked very hard for them, one after another in plain sight of each other. They made someone who was not skilled in humanely dispatching these animals do the work, and the animals panicked and suffered. In this day and age there are groups who take retired greyhounds who would be culled off the tracks, and condition them into family homes. The company could have reached to the media to find homes for the dogs, rather than look around a little bit, and give up early. But instead they did what they did, and now the whole community is going to suffer. I myself just got out of a situation where animals are merely seen as disposable attractions, and this just does not sit well with me -.-

This is why we can't have nice things.
*sigh* Theres one in every family sire.... TWO in mine actually, and they allways manage to ruin special occasions...

i just got home and picked up the paper, and it said that there were over 500 dog owners down at the Kelowna waterfront to sign a petition yesterday about what happened. i wish i had known!

The BC Supreme Court ordered WorkSafe to hand over documents pertaining to the slaughter, which they did, with the exception of the health files of the accused. HOPEFULLY, that will shed a lot of light on what went on.
