The doctor said that my cholesterol count is 5.5% more than the average amount of a human my age and health. And thats A LOT. Im skinny as a twig but I guess its from eating all that meat and fat off my steak everytime. I cant help it, Im a carnivore. I was raised in Alberta, Beef province. Plus my eating habits are weird. I only eat when I feel like it and only eat what I feel like eating. And most of the time its meat. So Im gonna hafta make some life changes, like eating better and be active, ya know like what fat people need to do to lose weight. Gotta burn off all that cholesterol in my arteries. Cause if I dont take care of it now, theres a good chance Ill get a heart attack in the future. Any advice? Cause so far it hasnt been a good ride =/

Work out!

I've never had any official tests done, but a few years back I tried one of those inflatable cuff machines at the drug store for kicks - and found all my measurements for blood pressure were through the roof!  Since then after getting in better shape, I am now back to "average".

Riot Da Woof!

^Agree's with Uni,

Cardio Training is the name for your Cholesterol Burning game! Long runs with intermittent sprints is one of your best bets!
Try stay away from medication, it's out there, but it's not a very healthy alternative.

Do you smoke? if yes, TRY to slow the habit if not stop completely as it's a contributing factor.

I know you said you like to eat meat, but what about fish? Try GRILLING up oily fish (sounds counterproductive, i know), as Oily fish are rich in Omega-3's

Best of luck in your endeavors!

Hmmm, high cholesterol. Even being in good shape, my cholesterol is high, my doctor says it is genetic in my case and no age jokes (lol). It has been high all my life and smoking isn't helping. Cardio work helps so does fish as mentioned in one of the other replies, high in omega 3. There is good cholesterol and bad  cholesterol as I am sure your doctor mentioned, biking is good to help drop it.

Another thing that helps drop bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol is niacin, it is available with out prescription and can be found in the vitamin section of the stores, it can cause discomfort (itchy skin, flushing ect).

I would recommend talking to your doctor before using it or any other alternative, it is much cheaper then some of the meds that can be prescribed, with less side effects.

Easing off the red meat and replacing some of it with healthier alternatives like chicken and fish is probably a good idea.

I've been working out and trying to eat fewer calories and more veggies and I've lost about 25 pounds since November - I wouldn't be surprised if my blood pressure and cholesterol have gone down with my weight. I think changing your overall eating habits is always more effective than trying to go "on a diet". I hear a lot of people talk about how vegetables are "rabbit food" or whatever, and that's a silly attitude to take if you care about your health.

I've always been a little skeptical about trying to compensate for an unbalanced diet with drugs and/or supplements - better to rework your diet - but I don't think taking a multivitamin a day just to make sure you're getting some kind of baseline amount of essential nutrients is a bad idea.

I got pegged for high blood pressure a few years ago, and my cholesterol was up as well. I cut beef mostly out of my diet (and bacon *sob*), started eating more chicken and some fish now and again, and work out most days of the week. Last time I was tested, I was a touch low on "good" cholesterol and my "bad" was just fine. Diet and exercise do the job.

But damn I miss burgers. =/

Work high fibre breads into your diet. Also eat lots of rare (as in not cooked) dark-flesh fish (i.e. salmon). You're looking for foods High in HDL cholesterol which breaks down the LDL cholesterol and transports it to the liver for processing and removal. Also, ask your doctor what the ratio of HDL to LDL is in your blood. If your HDL is high, and your LDL is low, you don't need to worry about your cholesterol being high, ad HDL cholesterol is not harmful.
