to Therian, or not to Therian, that is the question

Yeah, it's when people take it too far.
Like, if you think in a past life you were a cat, cool.
If you think you're a cat trapped in a human's body, that's fine.
If you're going to start acting like a cat in public (including but not limited to hissing at people and scratching things) that's not fine.

I'm not the kind of guy who's gonna go out of my way to screw with people for being different, but there is such thing as social acceptance and I feel like some of the more zealous "otherkin" tend to either forget or disregard that.

It's the same with every fandom or idea. I'm a furry (clearly, lol) but I'm not going to go to school wearing a fursuit because that's wierd and probably off putting to other students. Also because I don't have a fursuit, but that's beside the point =P

Not sure what "otherkin" you have actually met with wording like that. (the nutty 16yr old ones maybe, who get over excited about everything?) But it honestly sounds like more in line with how some furs act and put on a show. Furries creeping out other furries is nothing new fursuits or not XD... I would have to agree on the one notion though, anyone who runs about barking and hissing at people is a few french-fries short of a socially competent happy meal, but thats more of a wide spectrum issue than something that falls mostly upon on rather small group in this large fandom.

I am of course not going to think of otherkin as the same people I have known. (I apologize for my cloudy vision from past experiences with people like this) The ones like the folks here are much more mature and have a good sense of reality compared to the ones I knew who were just completely blind in lala land and used it as a way to escape their real life problems only digging themselves into a rut. *That* is the type of otherkin I knew, the irresponsible kind. Probably why I am not so open minded about this whole otherkin thing, but I know damn well not everyone is like that, like I said everyone here is way more mature. I hope I don't sound like a narrow minded type person but really I'm not, it's just an experience I had, but then again why be sorry, I can't control how people are and how they treat others.
I am but a blade in the crowd.

I have seen what comes of those who raise themselves above others.

I like to think of it as a guide for me to better (not worsen) myself, the belief something is within if me - separate from what we can even define as reality. I am human on the outside, but can draw purpose and courage from what I believe is missing, or not fully revealed to me. It is a sort of task to look forward to when I reflect in myself, to discover whatever me is (even if me is not a tiger at all, or if he is just a passing something,) being open is very important I believe. You can make yourself whatever you want to be - as one does, you can consciously choose act furry, but the otherkin thing is not chosen - it is discovered along your path. That is what I believe anyway. It only changes things in another plane.

N-Nutty 16 year old kind..? ;w; sounds kind of like me

Though lol, one thing I hate is when they use it as an excuse to act like an animal in ridiculous amounts or when people say they are one just to be or feel cool. @_@ Makes it feel like a bandwagon..

That's what I meant earlier. I have met more than enough people acting like animals in front of everyone, then wondering why people don't like being with them. It's okay to be an otherkin! Just learn to moderate and suppress your self, that's all! x3

I view it as a pass time, a hobby, not much more. others can take it as serious as they want to, and it don't bother me none. Provided that they have good public decorum.
I was pondering 'pon ponderous thoughts when I came upon one that was wondrous, and I was wondering whether or not you see, you'd partake upon this thought with me.

Therianism is at best a broad spectrum, coming down to how one perceives a connection with a given creature, treating it as a totem of sorts.

I for one can be considered a therian on the grounds that my fursona - a bronze dragon from D&D3.5 that's also a cyborg - is a rather symbolic reflection of myself, but that's about as far as I take it.
