The concept confuses me.  Anyone able to explain it to me?
"Times running short.  I'm going to go punch this mountain into space"

Someone makes a character. and sells it.
Person who gets it (wins auction or purchases it at whatever price artist put) gets full rights to the character.
The character is now theirs. They can get commissions of them, draw them, change them, whatever. It is now their property.

The only thing most artists ask is that you link back to them for credit on the original character creation.

Its no different then auctioning off a commission. Just that its a created character that someone can use. (not everyone in this world has the creativity to create their own characters. also hense art theft. Adoptables give people a -sometimes- cheap way to get something of their own and not having to do the creating themselves.)

Hope that made sense.

That and adoptables are often just recolours/slight edits of a template, and are usually a waste of time.
there's actually methods of creating an OC without wasting money on adoptables.
i.e. you could make a listing system of species/parts/colours/themes/patterns to brainstorm.
or use said list and roll dice for random results and try it out

Some people just do not know how to do that. Trust me. i've given lists to people on how to do it, and they just dont know how to process that kind of creativity.
Its not a waste of time for those who are looking for something and find what they want in an adoptable. It may be anoyying to get spam in your inbox of it, but if its not your thing, thens imply do not look at it.

There -are- people who benefit from it and its not just the artists. People want a change of pace with their sonna, or try something new but arent sure what. Something they see a person selling/giving away might strike their interest. its no different then going into a game store and buying a new game that looks fun. Its the same concept. "you cant make it yourself. So find someone who can." (same concept with art. cant draw? then people will find someone who can.)

The average person cannot make a console game. So, we buy it from those people who can provide. Dont like the game? Dont buy it. simple as that.

Not everyone has the time either, to sit down and work at your method until they find something they want.

I agree with Tem some people just have the Creativity and some instead choose to use already created characters sadly (Luckily no one yet has tried to steel my sona but I know it's only a matter of time before someone tries to -.- )

As Tem said there are ways to help brainstorm and some free Ref sheets that you can color yourself and edit to add things like hair that some artists have done (a quick search on FA should find them) which do help when it comes to making a color scheme for your sona to get it down into paper or on a image editing program instead of it all being in your head. Sometimes being able to see it can help the decision instead of keeping it in your head

Some people just lack the art skills which is fully understandable and for some adoptable are a way to try and create a new character to try out and see if it fits the person. Sometimes it works out and the person turns the adoptable character into a sona or a character they will use alot or to some others sometimes they don't quite work out
