Fashion help needed: Uni Grad

My boyfriend is graduating from university on the the afternoon of the 30th as well as a cocktail party after and I am going to be attending but I've never been to a graduation of any kind not even a high school one. I have no idea what people wear to those type of events, of course I want to look nice but I have no idea what the approperate attire is.

Graduating from university, to me, means wearing a suit. I'm thinking business style but if you insist, a fur suit could go over well. Casual dress up would also be acceptable. As for the party after, limit yourselves to max of 2 drinks. You don't want to say or do anything stupid. Also go eat before the party.  Slows the alcohol absorption. Have fun.
