: Looking into going back to school and getting out of the welding field
: Jesse December 08, 2014, 12:31:12 -07:00
I have been welding for almost 5 years Im getting no where applying to unions I have done two levels of schooling for it and every day I regret it more and more.At this point this is not something I want to do for another 5 years let alone the rest of my life and im not sure what to do in terms of taking up another field.I dont want to have to start from scratch at minimum wage again I cant do that this far into life especially with the cost of living what it is.

Anyone else changed fields after nearly finishing another one.

If I do go trades again im figuring electrician possibly try to get on with BC hydro,or even IT or game development, maybe something in culinary arts,I knda got rushed into making a decision and I never got to really try stuff out to find what fits for me.

One of the ship builders in north vanc is or will be soon, looking for all kinds of welders and workers. They got a contract to build navy ships.

Welding is a brutal industry to get into nowadays. From what I've heard, it's extremely saturated and the contracts are too short.

Question is: do you enjoy welding? If so, why not specialize? A good friend of mine is going for his underwater welder schooling, and he seems to think it will be the career for him. I know I got really bored of doing SMAW all the time at my last job, but then I got introduced to GTAW and now I can't get enough of it.

Of course, if you want to get out of it altogether, that's up to you. But it'd be a shame to put those years of education on the shelf to never be used again. Why not go for millwright? Power engineering? At least then you'd still find use for your welding skills. :)

I may look into power engineering seems like a good route.I am just concerned I will run into the same issue i did with welding where unless you have 5 years or more experience or are willing to go to remote work camp there are no jobs for you.
