: PS3 Repairs
: orwin August 29, 2014, 06:38:13 -06:00
Well, it looks like the blu ray drive died on my PS3...I really don't want to spend a ton of money on a new one this late in this console's life....

Can anyone recommend a good place to get it repaired?  I don't know if I want to tackle reparing it myself...had it apart...I can't tell if it's the laser that's gone or if it's something more serious.

Disks go in, laser lights up but won't spin.

Quit very suddenly while playing Last of Us, (Which I only bought yesterday)  :-[

Can you not get a new b/ray player and re and re it into the console you got?

If you can put in a disc and the laser lights but the disc won't spin then I would hazard a guess that the problem is the disc drive motor.

I've done some research and apparently this is a pretty common problem.

There are several different drive modules, depending on your model and the key is that you have to keep the circuit board from that drive, or the replacement won't work. (and the replacement has to be exactly the same)

I've ordered a new laser and deck module from ebay for $30 US shipped....I hope this fixes the problem.  It's a bit of a task to install it but it beats $199 for a new one if it works.

The deck comes with new spindle motor, so hopefully this covers anything that might be wrong.

Got the part today.  New laser and drive mechanism.  Installed, system is working perfectly again.

So if anyone else has one that the drive has conked out, it's about a $30 fix.  Just make absolutely sure you order the identical part number to what your unit has.
