: Furry fiction archives or lack thereof
: Silvermink August 18, 2009, 09:19:50 -06:00
Anyone else wish there was another furry fiction archive out there besides Yiffstar (that people actually used, I mean)? Its design, coding, and, well, frankly also content all drive me bonkers - I find it hard to find anything good because people seem to rate up the mediocre stuff as well.

I'd consider starting one but have terrible visions of how much of my time it would take up.

I know there's some stuff on FA, as well, but I find that without tag-based searching it's really only good for finding more stuff by people I already know I like.

Absolutely. There have been any number of adult sites, but I don't recall anything that was for a general audience, or reasonably formatted.
All of my stuff is up on FA, and the adult stuff on Yiffstar - I definitely know which one gets more traffic. Some of my stories have nearly 5000 hits on Yiffstar... and maybe 50 on FA. Stories get horribly lost amongst the steady flow of artwork there. Mind you, general-audience stuff disappears into the mist most places - when I had my one piece published by Anthro, I got no comments at all.
It'd be great to have a dedicated fiction archive of some sort - I'd be there in a second, and I have a feeling a lot of other authors would be.

I've also noticed that there's so much shit writing out there when it comes to furry fiction. I think a site that insists on basic quality would be a good idea. I am so sick of reading horrific, face-clawing errors that you would think a 4th grader could spot.

This is why I tend not to read a lot of stuff. It's hard to dig through the crap to find the gold sometimes, and that always disappoints me.

Its honestly quite sad... I think what would be really good is a place where we can put our unpolished stuff out for someone else to edit. After all sometimes a writer is just too blinded by his own greatness to see that... well he screwed up BAAD. Thats what editors are for and I think it would help all of us... what do you think?
: Re: Furry fiction archives or lack thereof

That would definitely be useful. I know when I submitted a piece to ANTHRO, the editor's suggestions were really useful - most of the time I feed stuff to friends to read, and get responses ranging from detailed "this sucks" notes to people saying "nice" and nothing else. =P

I'd actually considered whether there were enough folks locally to start a writer's circle of some sort. Having some other eyes on my work can only be good.

XD I posted a story to another forum I got to (Scaletopia) And got lots of "Good" and "I love it" but... nothing that would really help me improve which is what I was hoping for lol

That drives me nuts, yeah - feedback is definitely thin most of the time. The ANTHRO story, I got nothing after it was published - I don't even know if anyone read it. =P
(Mind you, I do get reasonable comments for the more adult works I've done; many of them are fascinating, biologically...)

Hehehe. I'll have to get something new written, then, so you can have some fresh material to skewer...

The problem is that sites like Yiffstar don't make any differentiation in their rating systems between "I thought that was well-written" and "I came", so poorly-written wank material gets rated up along with the well-written stuff. I'd like to see "literary merit" and "sexiness" be separate axes, but people would probably just use them improperly and give everything they like for any reason 5 points on both.

Oh sorry. They are attachments (You can do the same thing with pictures on this forum) You just click the link in my post and you can download them. If that is a problem however (they don't have a virus as far as I am aware but one can NEVER be to careful these days) I can try something else. Any suggestions?

Yes, yes it is dead. The forum was completely erased and rebuilt from the ground up and my stories were lost. I will upload a new link as soon as Tynan fixes the computer that has the stories on them and they are re uploaded to scaletopia. Heck i'll also upload them here when i get the chance ok?

Well, YS redesigned. Unfortunately, SoFurry's interface is as bad if not worse. :P

Anyone tried to post stories on FA? Good lord, they really need a "just paste it in" submission method.
: Re: Furry fiction archives or lack thereof
: Tony Greyfox January 29, 2010, 09:27:23 -07:00
Most of my stuff is posted on FA, usually as an RTF. It doesn't necessarily show up in the FA interface, but gives the option to download it instead, which seems to work. Either that or it explains why I can have a story with 40 views on FA and 1000 on YS. =P
It might be a better option to have an entry box to paste in on FA, now that you mention it.
I'm managing to find stuff on SoFurry, though their forums are an utter disaster...

Probably more likely the suckitude of the exposure on FA. I have a story up there with 17 views, mostly me. On SF it has about 600 views.

Here's an interesting metric. I posted a story almost at the same time on FA and on SoFurry the other night. It's a fairly generalist type adult story, no specific kinks or anything that would draw a specific audience.

Last night I had about 140 views on SoFurry, compared to 37 on FA. Tonight, I've got 253 on SoFurry, compared to 42 on FA. Two favs on FA, 5 on SF (plus a half-dozen others on other stories generated by the new traffic).

The difference: tags, a more robust search feature, and a longer-lasting "new stories" list on SoFurry, I think.

I've half given up on trying to find stories myself. I wasn't too pleased with what had happened to Yiffstar myself. When I go there, half the time I find myself getting fustrated. Last I checked, they don't even have a links page, which was one of the features that I used to use at times.

On a related subject, I once tried starting up a group to help bring people together in order to come up with story ideas. I had meant it to focus on the cleaner aspects of writing. Unfortunately it didn't really go anywhere and eventually it ended up being taken down due to serious lack of activity.

I don't think finding stories isn't quite as much of a problem. Rather that it is finding stories that don't always focus on the more dirtier aspects of the fandom that seems to be more of a rarity. Perhaps it is just me.... or something.
