Privacy is one of the many reasons I avoid Facebook. I have an account there but it mostly collects dust.

The scary thing is this is apparently from 2006 and the situation is only now starting to be looked at. They got called out by Canada's Privacy Commissioner not long ago.

I don't avoid Facebook.. it is one of the biggest connections I have left with my friends back in my hometown of Montreal. Yes, it can be pretty scary, all the data they collect from us, but Facebook does have its benefits, that to me greatly over-weigh its downsides.

See in all reality, anything you do on the internet IS recorded Somewhere, no matter what, computers always record.  so its not JUST facebook, its everything you do online, it gets recorded and stored somewhere.   heh, but thats never stopped me XD

a) that would require so much storage that no one would bother unless there was a very compelling reason to do so - web servers, etc., rarely log everything by default (what makes you think "computers always record?") and

b) that's no reason not to look for services with sane privacy policies so you at least know what's going on with your data.

I use Facebook, but only minimally to keep up with people I have no other way of keeping up with. I generally avoid the games and such, many of which I'm sure are just collecting information for marketing purposes.

Actually in Sweden they have a super computer that records every website being accessed ever. this is not a myth. look it up.  but more relevantly facebook isn't the only thing that tracks you. the states have cameras positioned along our borders that see ten miles into Canada. Further more cross border liscences are encrypted and tracked, as they are now doing with bank cards and visas. And pretending like that doesn't violate our privacy, there's still multiple satellites that watch our movements every second of the day. i mean how else can google earth update every five minuets?

Almost every day peoples rights are being abused, by companies who want to make better products, and by our own governments, but most people are completely unaware of that fact or either don't believe it affects them really. But really, no one cared until they found out about it. Which is slightly saddens me. I guess this is what they mean when they say ignorance is bliss... but that's just my opinion

With face book, the thing is, even if you're not active on it, they still put any info about you on it without your permission. If you say, kill someone and its in the news, it's on facebook. If you do something at all it will be added to your facebook. You cannot delete your account. I took off the pictures on my face book and THREE of them were put back on without my permission, because they were on my Photobucket. And I complained but they emailed me and said I agreed to it. So I can't do anything about it.

I don't believe everyone is being tracked every minute of every day. Hell less than 2 billion people even HAVE computers or internet access. Less have credit cards and fewer even have homes. So actually not physically possible to scan everyone every day even with satellites because there are areas they are a) restricted to scan, etc, or b) There aren't enough to take a picture every second of every day and have the STORAGE to keep every single photo. If they really had all our info, there would be extremely little crime, and I'd say no cold cases what so ever. But instead, there are more cold cases than crimes actually solved or even reported. Just small reasons I don't believe everyone is being monitored.

Well, what I'm saying is that even if it were the case that everything you ever do on the Internet is logged somewhere, most of would probably be saved for a minimal amount of time unless it was considered to be of interest, because unimaginable amounts of data pass through the Internet every day and the amount of storage space required to "log the Internet" would be beyond belief - I just don't think it's realistic to assume that given that even spy agencies have budgets, you know?

Anyway, a little off topic. I think we agree that people often aren't as interested in privacy as they ought to be. I think one of the main things to consider is that it's very easy to put something ON the Internet, but very difficult (maybe impossible) to take it OFF, so even if it's something you don't mind being a matter of public record now, you might be kicking yourself in five or ten years.

Eh, I've got a Facebook account that I use mostly to keep in touch with some folks I've worked with - I occasionally post some pictures I've taken and leave status updates. I don't have any personal stuff up there other than my real name, so it's not a huge issue to me. If it gets there, I'll just leave it to die.

Well, when it comes down to storing what you have been up to on the internet, its not much storage, just cookies right? and thats tracking you.  but really, i would not be worried too much about that unless you partake in illegalities online.

I think all the tracking is for the baddies. Like the pedophiles and so on. It helps but they could to more. I think they're just lazy and leave it up to chance >>;
