...or thinks it should be decriminalized!

Sensible B.C. has started a campaign to decriminalize marijuana possession in 2014, they have from September 9 to December 5 to get 400,000 signatures. Keep an eye on their "upcoming events calendar" for any events in the area you live. And even if you don't smoke, like I don't, consider signing anyways. :-3

there is so much money wasted by the police, and the courts in the pursuit of catching tokers.  this money could be re-directed to pursue the people that break into your car or house, those that do cocaine or heroin or other harder drugs.

each year more people die of alcohol and tobacco than die from a marijuana overdose.  to overdose on thc one would have to smoke anywhere from 20 thousand to 40 thousand joints PER DAY.  not at all possible because one would fall asleep long before you got anywhere near 1,000 joints smoked.

do a google search for a list of those that have died as a result of a thc overdose.  then google for those that have died at the hands of the police as a result of the police searching for pot.  i wonder which one has zero deaths and which one has numerous reports and still counting?

agree or not with legalization, what sensible bc is trying to do is get this provinces attorney general to inform the police departments not to pursue those found with small amounts of marijuana in their possession. please sign the petition.

on monday, 9 / 9 / 2013 was the launch of the actual campaign.  it goes on until december when the 'votes' get counted.  then after that, electionsbc gets hold of it and counts and cross check the results to make sure that nobody signed twice
my guess is that sometime in march we will get the results.

if you are interested in signing the petition and you live in the riding of BURNABY - LOUGHEED, contact me to arrange a place for you to sign.  you may only sign this petition ONCE and ONCE only.

i am a registered canvasser for BURNABY - LOUGHEED.  you must be registered as a voter.  you cannot register to vote and then sign as the cut off date to do so has past.

no matter what your riding, if you are a registered voter, please sign.  this is not to legalize or promote the smoking of marijuana but to stop the police from pursuing those for simple possession of small amounts.  charges would still be laid if the possession amount was obviously for the purpose of selling.

please sign.

I know how you feel. I hope there is another petition to make smoking in public illegal.

Smoking in most public spaces is already technically illegal, but is un-enforceable owing to convoluted jurisdictional matters. Better yet, petition to redefine the current fine-handling for smoking, so ordinary cops can actually issue the fine for smoking in a posted no-smoking area. Fun fact: Transit cops, VPD, et-al, cannot issue a smoking fine thanks to archaic health regulations and jurisdictional arcana. Fix the legislation we already have.

On the other side of that coin though, Rainratty, a blanket ban will not be helpful; Smokers of any substance will smoke, regardless of any posted penalty or bystander request, if that particular individual is inclined to be inconsiderate. By the same token, the responsible smokers will use designated areas, dispose of their butts and roaches properly, or otherwise just choose a more appropriate moment. Failing that? Talk to them. Tell them flat out, that it's uncool; Silence is otherwise consent, in the eyes of someone inconsiderate enough to impose, and I've found they tend to fold under a little condemnation or diplomacy.

Yeah, in the last place I lived, my two roommates didn't care about what I thought at all, and smoked it every day... inside the house even though the landlord said to knock it off. Then I moved here and all was good for a year and now someone is smoking it outside (and it blows into the windows... and in summer it isn't really fair to tell people to keep their windows closed) every day. I am not entirely sure who it is though, so the building management said they'd keep an eye out.

It really is too bad that it causes such an adverse reaction in me, because otherwise, I wouldn't really care.

Zenia; I'm lucky in that pot not only does not bother me, I consider the odor pleasant in small quantities. On the other hand, processed blond tobacco like cigarettes will actually raise skin irritation, to say nothing of what it does to my breathing and nose. On the other hand, I've been playing a worrisome game at work the past few weeks; Is it a skunk, or is it pot. Lately, it's been the skunk-with-attitude. D:
: Re: To anybody who smokes Marijuana...
: zenia September 12, 2013, 09:58:28 -06:00
heh I am like that with cigarettes, sort of. While a lot of smoke is gross (I am not a smoker at all), the occasional whiff of one cigarette does not bother me and is a little pleasant.

Pot on the other hand, always smells like skunk-cabbage/poop/gross to me. :P

My partner's girlfriend is actually deathly allergic to it - she has to run if there's pot smoke in her vicinity. :( She got hit at VancouFUR once by people smoking outside the back door of the hotel.

I still think it should be legal, though, all things considered.

The Occam's razor solution is, just roll it in under similar legislation to alcohol and tobacco consumption; Prohibited in most public spaces, taxed at a level high enough to ensure a revenue stream, but low enough to deter organized criminal activities, restricted for use by minors. And for heaven's sakes, they'd need to update the bloody smoking laws to actually permit enforcement. Their current state is arcane and ridiculous at best.

http://db.sensiblebc.ca/postal.php (http://db.sensiblebc.ca/postal.php)    just shows a small box in the upper left corner.  enter your postal code and magically, your electoral riding will appear

in order to sign the referendum petition you must have registered to be on the voters list prior to Sept 9/2013 when this campaign got rolling.

i now have copies of all the petition sheets for the electoral districts in the lower mainland.

if you do not sign between sept 9 and dec 7 - YOU DID NOT SIGN the official petition.
if you think you signed at the 4/20 gathering in front of the art gallery - YOU DID NOT SIGN the official petition

YOU CANNOT SIGN ONLINE            when you see a canvasser, (me?) please ask to sign.  all i ask is that you know your riding aka electoral district.  eg burnaby - lougheed, port moody - coquitlam, chilliwack - hope

PLEASE SIGN

note - cultivation (growing) and selling (trafficing) will still be illegal under this proposal.  this is just to instruct the police departments of BC not to charge people for simple possession. example -- 20 grams in 20 one gram bags is chargeable (trafficing), where 20 grams in one bag would be non chargeable (personal use)

other questions - please ask

Speaking from a security standpoint, I'd much rather deal with a pothead then a drunk...
I've often seen alcohol to be much more of a problem in Provincial Parks or Work Camps, though of course too much of ANYTHING is a quite often a bad thing. Like with most things, I believe being responsible is key to having a good time.

If your not responsible... Your gonna have a bad time. /memegarbage

I think this is great, I'll be signing this for sure!

just because you pay taxes, and are not on welfare, does not mean you can vote.

not sure where you get your facts Star but the rules to vote in ANY election for public office are few.  to vote one must be 19 yrs of age, a CANADIAN CITIZEN, and live in the electoral district where the vote is to be applied. there is NOTHING in the election acts that says that you cannot vote if you are on welfare.  if you are on welfare, 19 yrs or over, AND a Canadian citizen, you CAN vote.  strangely enough, if you are in prison -- you CAN vote

They asked if I paid taxes or was on Disability (Welfare does NOT count by the government apparently. Thankfully I'm not on welfare anymore). excuse me Star but I dont understand why they would tell you that you can sign without being registered to vote in election.

And to claim people on disability cannot sign is also false. I do not understand why you would claim these.

Please make sure your info is CORRECT before you try to wrongfully inform others. This is a very important topic to my heart and I find your wrong info very upsetting.

If we can collect enough signatures from all across BC then we can have a referendum in September 2014 on decriminalizing cannabis in our province.

We will need to collect signatures from 10% of the registered voters in every single one of BC's 85 electoral districts. Also, all signatures must be gathered in a 90 day period.

We will be starting that 90-day clock in September 2013.

Over the coming months we will be pre-registering our supporters and volunteers, so that we have a big head start when we begin the official signature gathering campaign.

If we get enough signatures during Sept-Nov 2013, then there will be a historic referendum vote in September 2014, to pass the Sensible Policing Act into law.

BC's referendum law

BC's referendum system has fixed election dates, and the next one is set for September 2014. Any ballot initiative that has collected enough signatures by early 2014 will be put to a provincial vote that September.

It isn't easy to get enough signatures. We need at least 10% of registered voters in every single one of BC's 85 ridings to sign in support, that's over 400,000 people! Plus, we will have only 90 days to collect them.

However, with some hard work and careful planning, it can be done.

We are not going to be collecting the official signatures until September-November 2013. But we are asking you to please register and volunteer now in support of our campaign, so that we can easily collect your signature when the time comes.

Register and volunteer now!

We will only succeed with thousands of volunteers from all across the province working to sign up and register their friends in support of this campaign.

If you want to see cannabis possession decriminalized in British Columbia, then please register now. Then get your friends to register too and get them to sign up all their friends.

We promise not to share any info with anyone. And we won't bug you with any calls. We'll only send you emails if you ask us too. Otherwise the only time we'll try to contact you again is when we need you to sign our ballot initiative between August and October 2013.

Make sure you're registered to vote!

You must be a registered voter to officially sign the ballot initiative petition next year. If you have voted before then you're already registered. Anyone who hasn't voted before can easily register to vote online.

Find out what else you can do to help the Sensible BC campaign!

Oh for pete's sake is no one actually reading what I said properly? I said people on disability CAN vote. I said it SEVERAL times. The woman asked if I had voted this year. I said NO. She said oh, well have you paid taxes or are on disability? I said YES. She said okay then you can sign!

What part of that is so hard to frigging read? Seriously. No one is actually reading what I said and jumping to conclusions. I have asked people, several people, and they all understood what I frigging said.

She said if I had NOT voted this year, or had NOT paid taxes, or was not on a government whatever, then I could NOT sign. That simple. SHE said it. NOT me. I am repeating what I was told.

Period. End of this stupid conversation that no one seems to be able to read properly.

here is information right from them answering my question. So Star if you did not regerster as a voter by the 9th. Your signature will not count. thanks for trying though. I suggest you find the canvassor who misinformed you and correct her so they stop collecting signatures that will mean nothing in the eyes of the law or this referendum.

Sensible BC
Yes, you need to be a registered voter by September 9 or your signature won't count.
People on welfare can sign, prisoners can sign, police and military can sign, anyone can sign as long as they're on the voters list in BC.
Even if you're not a registered voter, you can still volunteer and help out on the campaign.

If you are 18 and have payed your taxes they register you automatically. Which confuses me since they don't explain that fact on the site for this referendum. They do include a link to register to vote as well though.

If you are 18 and have payed your taxes they register you automatically. Which confuses me since they don't explain that fact on the site for this referendum. They do include a link to register to vote as well though.

My mistake. God legal things can be confusing as hell !

>.>... lol... Yeah.. I know it will count.. cause... she was the lady on the bus with that same guy that was on TV. They were both there. And some other ladies and guys. I got two free stickers...
And people on welfare who paid taxes or voted can sign. what she said to me was that if they didn't do either of them. Disability was a different matter. She started to talk about it then was interrupted by another lady... she was explaining the details of it...

And yeah it is confusing... but I made sure to confirm what I learned... She even said the whole vote thing is silly to say because of how early voting ends and the collection goes until December... I wouldn't tell someone wrong information unless I was 100% sure and it came from the people who did it themselves. She had asked me if I was a registered voter. I had no idea what that meant. So she asked if I voted this year. Then the convo happened as I have said before. She asked me this exactly "Did you pay your taxes or are on government disability?" Because out here in Abby, pretty much everyone has troubles with either welfare or Disability. Both are different. And a pain...and frustrating when you have anxiety issues. Especially welfare...

anyway..off topic...

Agian, what was said, people on welfare who did not do either of the other things, cannot sign. It is confusing... They can sign if they paid taxes or voted... I think that's what got lost in translation. Sorry for that...
