: Star Wonder March 11, 2013, 02:39:42 -06:00
Don't know if I can/should go. Last time I went camping with anyone people ridiculed me and it was not fun. I love camping, I miss it. But too many people are dicks to me because of what I eat. My own brother shoved a hotdog in my face and his friends tried to do the same thing. I wasn't even doing anything. It's happened many times to me even after I've cooked hotdogs for other people. And no one defended me or helped me. So... camping has been severely ruined for me, even having a barbeque has been ruined for me and it's so hard to trust anyone anymore when it comes down to it. I miss Giz and all my friends, but I don't know if camping is a smart plan considering my past experiences even with "trusted" people.

That really sucks that a few select people ruined enjoying a rather unique experience for you, star. :<

I wish it was a "few". Unfortunately it has been many. People I thought were my friends too. I am just afraid it will happen again. I don't care that other people eat meat I even COOK it for other people. I don't push my choices on other people. I may say how much healthier it is and how red meat is bad and that people should eat fish and chicken, duck and other things. but I never tell them to stop eating meat. Ever. People are omnivores. I am the way I am for mental and health and ethic reasons. I care about how the animals are treated not just in life, but for death. I use to eat free range chicken and so on, and just lost my marbles when I found out that their deaths were just as brutal as any other animal. It made me so sick I literally cannot eat it. It's not even a choice for me anymore it's become a mental state. However, I have NO issue making and cooking meat for anyone who asks, even my mate. But people like to think it's funny to gang up, or just laugh at me when someone goes out of their way to make me upset, cry or puke. I want to go camping, but the question is SHOULD I go.

Ugh, that's really lame. Some people seem to get this idea that it's cool and manly to eat a lot of meat and anyone who doesn't is a wuss and can be pushed around.

Just another expression of the urge to bully which afflicts some people of questionable character, I guess.

For what it's worth, if I saw this happening I'd say something.

that sounds really crappy! I can tell you that you would be with friends who would protect you and your dietary requirements. I would never put up with such bullying at CampFur - EVER!
You are most certainly welcomed and encouraged to come along ... you are missed here as well!

you didn't quite say if you were a vegan or vegetarian.  so what.  there are others that have similar diet restrictions.  provisions can be made for you.  in the camping trips i have gone on with Gizmo, not one person forced anyone to eat something they didn't wan't.  friendly encouragement maybe for something they never tried before, and i stress friendly encouragement.  ex  if you have never had moose meat and there was moose meat then friendly encouragement would be made.  forcing someone to eat meat when it was stated they did not want it would not be tolerated.  not by Gizmo nor anyone else.

one person you may want to talk with is a vegan by allergy and he manages to go camping so maybe the two of you could conspire to make your own menu.  he makes a great stew / soup with vegan "meat" that is delicious and i do not eat my veggies.

part of the great things about being a member of the fur community in this area is that we are respectful of other furs and their beliefs.  so please be willing to trust us not to force you to eat something you do not want to eat.  you will enjoy yourself for sure.

I can't speak for anyone else but I can assure you that if I saw someone trying to force food into someones mouth I would pick them up and toss them in the river.

Let them cool off for a bit.

Don't worry to much about that, I'm Vegan. The worst we get is the occasional ribbing for how tofudogs look like melting plastic when cooked over a campfire.

What's wrong with tofu dogs? Seriously? Make them into chili dogs with beans on 'em and they're pretty tasty. :O

If Kuviare and I go, we will need to bring our own food right? We will be needing things like vanilla soy milk, and our type of bread and what not. We just need a place to store it as we have no cooler. Will there be somewhere that's pretty cold? Our soy milk goes bad really fast if it's left at anything above 10 degrees  :-\

As long as I don't have a lot to keep refrigerated, I am sure we can put your stuff with the rest. We will make it work. If you have a cooler to bring, that would help. I only have three. If you don't, no worries. We will figure it out.

Okay... Kuviare also has a concern.

It's $50 to pay, and normally that would include meals, but he and I have to provide our own. So he's a bit unsure about paying $100 for the two of us to go when we also have to bring our own stuff...

The registration fee not only covers the food, but the VERY expensive toilets (the largest expense of the entire weekend) I am bring onto the camp site and all the activities included. It would be near impossible for me to put this event on if I excluded the food portion of the registration for a select few, so three years ago, I decided that there would not be any discounts since I already go in the hole for putting this on for everyone.

nothing's wrong with them, the casing on them just tends to bubble and look like melted plastic when you cook them in the fire.

You won't need to bring all of your own food. Giz is really good about doing special egg/meat/milk-less varieties of things. Mostly just alternatives, though I usually bring extra anyway, but that's just me.

I am VERY particular on the food I eat. Most "meatless" things still have animal by products in them. Like Lactic Acids from dairy and other such things. Also they have to be organic, and non-GMO. And my food is not cheap either yet it's cheaper to make for the companies. (little tid bit that is sad and pathetic, Dairy companies tried to SUE Soy companies for the right to use the word "milk". Milk literally means white substance from plant OR animal. Even dandelions have a milk. Needless to say they lost horribly. Was even in the news paper. This was in the states I believe too.) Anyway, I just make my own food mostly now. My mom ruined it for me by "secretly" putting animal products in my food. It's also easier on everyone else too.  :-3 I don't like to be a burden so I prefer to make my own foodings. You wouldn't believe how much animal byproducts is in nearly everything. The only thing I have -no choice- in is medication. And an untreated UTI can lead to kidney failure and death. Lol. Anyway! I am rambling like a silly ADD kitty!

Also, with the hot dogs, not all dogs do that. Depends on the brand and the type. I get soy dogs, not Tofu. They are both made from Soy but are prepared and processed in different ways. ^^  :birdy:

Ah..but the thing is most refined white Sugars have been refined through animal bone char and what not unless it's beet sugar. So I have to buy raw/organic sugar. Which also has Iron and vitamines in it that get lost in refining. Rogers Sugar has a bone char refinery out here on the west side, and a beet sugar refinery on the east coast XD I would just honestly make my own food. I am REALLY good at cooking food that everyone loves and doesn't even know it's vegan XD

This looks like a lot of fun. Just out of curiosity what kind of food would be provided? I have to eat gluten free due to an intolerance (which basically means no wheat / wheat products) otherwise I get sick, so I'm usually kinda wary of these 'provided meals' (since most people don't really understand or know how extensively wheat is used in most food). So what sorts of things are brought?

Also what is the road to get there like? I have a small car who has proved herself fairly capable in the passed, but she is nowhere near a 4x4 :P

food is Gizmo's responsibility.  as for the roads into the campsite, there should be no problem for your car.  if you remember NikkiD's old car, an older Toyota Corolla, it went in just fine.  Neox has a Pontiac Sunfire and it gets in fine.   there is usually a paved road up to the actual site then it is like driving onto a field.  some bumps and such but nothing you need a 4 x 4 for.

ask for some pics of last year and you should get an idea of the terrain.  not as bad as one may think.

The menu is generally distributed closer to the event. I can tell you that flour based products will be a very small part of the menu and in my opinion, you should not have too many substitutions. I can provide you with more detail if you wish. Private message me for details.
I think Tokar described the site access so don't think I could add anything ...

Nikkid did a good job last year cook meat free dishes.

Once Gizmo has the menu figured out he may be able to bring additional incredients to have a gluten free dish for you. But reach out to him in early June for the meal plan.

For one thing I would not stand for letting someone do something as cruel and sadistic as the things you've described that the people at your last camping trip did to you, I greatly detest making fun of people just because they are different, and causing you to puke by shoving meat in your face? That isn't funny, its pathetic, just another way the human race is slowly decaying. I assure you that here you are among friends, and if anyone were to do any such thing not only would they have a problem with me they would have a problem with my friends, and I have quite a few friends....
