OK to give the news. 2 years ago BC was fighting to get this Holiday because the Rest of Canada HAS this holiday and BC did not. its Called "Family day"  we where Suppose to get this holiday LAST year but the BC Gov said No. that caused problems so they Corrected themselves and said it will be added 2013.

SO now instead of 3 months in a year that do not have holidays now only 2 months of the year do not have holidays.

Happy Family Day on Feb 11th

I honestly did not even know this was already a thing in other provinces.. that's actually kinda sad, BC seems to be the last for everything. We are the slow-poke of Canada I guess.

That's the tradeoff for existing on the other side of the country.  :-\

The good news is, at least we're away from Stephen Harper, so the nimby issue isn't as bad.

If you don't have full-time work, you won't appreciate being able to have a day off with a full day's pay, or working on a statutory holiday and getting 1.5x your regular pay. I'm not complaining about having another holiday, but I know that this is just the Liberals gasping for air as their time in office starts coming to an end, trying to grab more votes.

Being that I work full time as well, another holiday is VERY welcomed. I could how ever, care less about the political pusher stuff that some people seem to be a bit too concerned about. A single holiday wont even win many votes with people any ways and I would rather focus on the fact of having an extra day to see people and hangout or even have some more time with my mate.

The PUBLIC demanded that we come in line with the rest of the country. The liberal party listened and instated the holiday. Not sure how that is a grab for votes. It took time to put it all in place as unions and general employers had to budget for the new holiday. The money doesn't just happen to appear.

Wait, so we get another stat holiday? I guess I had better tell my boss about it. She was asking me today what the next stat was.

When I first moved to BC I was so disappointed to find out that Family Day didn't exist here. All my friends and family had the day off and I was at work. Boo. We have it now though and that makes me happy :3

I seem to be the only person who thinks it's a stupid idea for it to exist in the first place. The way I see it, it seems that the government has conveniently forgotten that we can enjoy time with our families on weekends, days off, other holidays that actually mean something, Summer vacation, Thanksgiving, Winter vacation, Xmas, and New Year's Eve.

Not to mention it's also the worst holiday to those who have no families.

I like to think my 'family' is whom I chose to have around me. In some ways, I guess that includes you!

you think this is the worst holiday for those without families?  try going through christmas holidays alone and knowing your aunt died of a massive heart attack on christmas eve and then your mother passes a few years later on the 22nd of dec.  that does not make for a happy holiday season.

for many, a long weekend in the middle of winter is a good thing.  you can work (if you have a job) and allow someone with a family to enjoy the day.  otherwise sit at home and mope.

I'm not wild about the name either but I don't think it's that big a deal. They could've called it "Day Off In The Middle Of February Day" as far as I'm concerned - whatever it's called it's a day off. Saying it's a stupid idea for it to exist just because its name isn't very good is a little bit silly.

I feel like my not liking the name suggests that the religious right's misuse of the word "family" is getting into my head, which I'm not particularly happy about.
: Re: NEW BC HOLIDAY - Feb 11
: Drake Wingfire February 07, 2013, 06:53:56 -07:00
In regards to the name, I would see this simply as a holiday that will be made into a commercial thing here like "Come on down to ________ this February 11th for Family Day, up to 50% off of all kids admission and 25% off adults!" I could see stores, movie theaters, mini golf parks, pools, all those fun little things really being pushed for the holiday. I honestly can't argue with it. These days people are so busy with work or other forms of stress in their lives, maybe what we do need is a day where we try and bring focus to being around those we love. Hell I could see me spending the day with some of my closest fur friends as I more or less consider them my second family.

Why are some of you complaining about a holiday? Oh boo hoo its called Family Day and I don't have any family. Your friends can be your extended family if you really want to argue against a free day off because of what its called. If being alone on "Family Day" upsets you hang out with them. Either way its a free day off, holiday pay, and time and a half if you do work. Its Win-Win.

The utterly fantastic thing about BC however is that our government in their infinitely wise ways decided to put BC's family day on the second Monday of the month instead of the third Monday like the rest of Canada. So unfortunately we will still be working while our out of province friends and family get the day off and vice versa. So they gave us the holiday but still managed to screw it up. Yay!

Thank you all for sharing, interesting to hear how family values comes into place in this newly implemented holiday.

It is interesting how last year I observed that BC has so many statutory holidays. There is a total of 12? This is quite a number, though I have not compared it with other provinces. Yet this gives many individuals working full time the opportunity to rejoice for an additional day of holidays and go onto a venture that takes more than just a two-day weekend. Drawback, it makes the Portman bridge more congested and more patrol on the road. But such holiday reminds us the value we want to stand for.

We have a fairly average number of statutory holidays in BC, at 10: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_holidays_in_Canada

That was actually the result of online polling, so blame that one on your fellow British Columbians.

Bah! Online polling. What nonsense is this? Lies I say. This government doesn't give a shit about what we want.
