Need a red LED and some wire. Just to hotwire the pieces to a battery for a small project.
You ought to be able to buy red LEDs from any Circuit City store, usually near the back on the "peg boards" where they keep the spare parts.
They usually come in packs of half-a-dozen or so.
Wire should be in a similar spot, though somehow I suspect that you can buy it cheaper elsewhere...
(not that I have any idea where)
don't know where you are but there are two electronic supply stores on main st near 28th (not exactly sure so look but in that area on the east side) they both sell strips of led lights buy the foot. easily cutable so you can make whatever length you want.

Sorry I only have a bunch of bright blue defused leds but I do have lots of wire, are you looking for single strain or multi?
You can look around your house for a toy or unwanted device containing a red LED and reuse it too.
Do you have the appropriate current limiting resistor for your future LED?
It depends on the battery which value is required, or what brightness you so desire.

I don't know how long your LED will last without a current-limiting resistor.
(both battery-power-wise and LED lifespan)
I highly recommend adding a small resistor to keep the LED from getting too much current.

With out a resistor it may only last an hour, if I remember correctly you would be fine with a 560 ohm resistor or higher. (taken electronics from grade 9 to 12) So if you need any help or have any questions feel free to ask.
The LED may want 25 milliamperes of current maximum, this should be fairly bright.
A red LED has a forward voltage above or around 1.8, so (9V-1.8V)=7.2V
Resistance = Voltage / Current, and so 7.2 / 0.025 (25 milliamperes) = 288 ohms of resistance.
The next highest standard value resistor is 300/330 ohms.
Life? An energizer battery may have 600 milliampere-hours of capacity, and so 600/25=~24 hours lifetime.
