: Making my 1st Head-Mesh style
: Rwaulie October 16, 2012, 06:22:10 -06:00
I decided to try out the Plastic Mesh method of making a fursuit head as I was able to access all the supplies and good tutorials.

I'm aiming for a moving jaw and glass eyes with tear duct vision.

I'll add pics as I go along.

If you have any tips in regards to my pics, please tell me. I'd love any help I can get.

I'm using Matrice's style of Mesh head making.

I've already done some of the head work,so I'll post it here.

1st pic is of just the frame, sewn together with yarn. I couldn't figure out how Matrice attached her jaw, so I ended up using 2 extra points to get it to work. Its not that strong due to only one point being on the moving part.

2nd pic is of the ears added on. I furred them 1st, so it would  be easier to attach.  I used hot glue to add the foam and fur, but used yarn to attach them to the head. Watch out for the hot glue, as its really hard to put the needle through.

HELP: Should I add more foam? I don't really want to as I don't want it to be puffy. I'm going for a more realistic look.  I plan to add the eyes (glass & mesh) next, then fur it.

I added some foam pieces to define the head.  Its meant to be a LION, but having some issues with muzzle shape.  The foam is couch cushion foam hot glued onto the mesh.

I used foam for the inside of the mouth and plastic vampire teeth. I might move the upper teeth further back in the mouth later.

The jaw is show open in the 2nd pic. I have elastic with a piece of wood glued to it under my chin to make it move. Again, not quite how Matrice said to do it, but I couldn't get the head on & off using her way. I think I made the head a bit too small!

Got the mesh and eyes installed.

Glass eyes are from a plush. Mesh is sports wear mesh.

I'm not sure on the eyes, as the Matrice tutorial doesnt show this type, but I'm doing fine so far.

2nd pic shows a Lion photo next to it...it doesn't look very Liony, sadly... Its not broad enough. Hopefully the mane later on will help

Would it be okay if I redlined your latest picture? It's looking really good so far, but I'm bad at explaining things through text without the words getting all muddled. xP

UPDATE!!

Added some fur and extra cheek foam.

Having trouble with draping the neck fur due to the head opening being a bit too small. That makes the lower jaw too small. I'm going to add snaps I think, to it as a closure.

Update!!!

I finished the head and wore it to Howloween.  Sadly, I messed up on the size so it was a bit too small. I had trouble seeing out the eyes from the front. I'll have to re-do that.

Here is the head all furred, but before the mane & wig was added

Here is me wearing it all complete!  The mane is glued/sewn on and the wig is hooked on the ears.
