: What really matters to you and why?
: Sevrin September 22, 2012, 06:42:01 -06:00
I've realized that if I look deep enough at the roots of the reasons I care about anything, the only reason I care about anything is because I choose to, which essentially frees me to care or not care about anything I want to!
I've decided I want to care about the advancement of the human race, we should always be getting better as a whole, we should be cooperating more, advancing technology more, and learning about the universe. I have decided to care about people, more specifically how I can make them feel good, I've had a lot of people do a lot of things for me in my life, and without those people I have no doubt I wouldn't be half of what I am today, so I want to help others to be happy and to discover themselves. I have also decided to care about nature, to marvel at its beauty and revel in it, I care about its preservation, and I care about all living things.

I have to wonder, while I decided I prefer things such as altruism, knowledge, and progress, what of others who have come to the same realization I have? what if they decided they have no desire to care about anything? and became dangerous selfish people... I believe the realizations I have come upon stray dangerously close to psychopathy, and psychopaths tend to be more like the latter scenario I mentioned... while I certainly believe I'm not a psychopath, I have to wonder if there are psychopaths who take different paths than the commonly perceived ones?
I think I'm getting off topic here, the original question was what really matters to you and why? so tell me, what matters to you personally?

Finding a career that I enjoy

Not dying alone in the gutter with nothing, because that would be sad.  ;D

Find an occupation as to which I would enjoy working in, and earning money...that's the first step. I refuse to pinpoint to one particular matter in terms of what matters to me in the span of my life, because even what we may aspire to will expire sooner or later.

oh man. it would be far to complex for me to go through what really matters to me and why.

*insert stereotypical comment about girls being complicated*

Oh come on Temrin, you strike me as a very intellectual person, I'm interested in what you have to say!

Job/ Careers are a pretty obvious answer, I would like to secure something I would enjoy doing my whole life. But that can almost go without saying for most of us here, who would want to be living in the slums and on welfare in this day and age?

For a more personal answer I would have to say a life lived in happiness regardless of where it takes me, pretty much enjoying your life when you can and getting out there.

This other one may not make as much sense but. To truly know myself and explore my identity, simplified really just meaning reaching for your true potential in multiple faucets.

Social justice for everyone, because I think it's the only civilized way for a society to function.

Feminism (which I think I have only begun to truly grok, as much as a white cis man ever can, recently), because I believe in a level playing field and as much control over one's own life as possible.

Sex-positivity (which is one of the reasons I fought like a cornered wolverine over the whole last-year's-VF-interview thing), because I think sex-negativity is a genuinely destructive force in so many ways.

In general, the destruction of "roles" for people in society in favor of having people do what they want to do, for reasons as above.

Civil liberties (I like Benjamin Franklin's quote that "they that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."), for reasons as above.

Nature, and particularly not destroying it because we can't seem to stop expanding our population, because I don't want to see us destroy this planet or ourselves.

Peace and quiet, because I'm an introvert and being surrounded by noise all the time drives me crazy.

The spark of light, movement, and shift in all things natural. Water that runs over banks; rocks that fall from embankments; trees that sway in the wind; a single leaf that falls from the tip of a branch and somersaults merrily to make its self-gratifying clatter on the ground; the ocean's teasing tongue on a beach; delicately undulating streams; time-splitting refraction of sunlight and colour in a splash of water; the whispering of feathers flying overhead.

I have no home in concrete monoliths, but as a tree I am rooted and in these mountains, I resonate.

It's challenging to really put what matters to me into words as I find that the things that matter to me are very fluid. That being said there are a some things that are core values for me.

I believe deeply in scientific law. When you are scientifically literate the world is yours to unravel. I think all people should be curious about the world around them.

I strongly oppose organized religion. I feel that it is a plague on humanity, it promotes ignorance, bigotry, sexism, and hate. It makes people closed minded, which is a terrible shame.

I care about justice. I feel that wrongs need to be righted and that it is the duty of all people in a society to stand up against injustice.

I believe in a fair and balanced society. I think that resources should be used equitably for the common good of all people instead of the exorbitant good of a few.

I believe that there should be no shame attached to mental illness/disorders, that those who think and behave a little differently deserve compassion and understanding. However I also don't believe it's an excuse to impose upon or exploit others.

I believe that all people are free to live their own lifestyle. As long as your personal eccentricity doesn't negatively impact others I'm 100% percent behind your right to enjoy it.

I believe in being honest with people, even though people may not always like the truth and often get mad, white lies don't help anyone.

I believe environmentalism is important. Sustainability is becoming a major global issue and it's everyone's responsibility to reduce, reuse, and recycle as much as possible.

I believe in the pursuit of happiness. Everyone should be free to search out and enjoy the things that make them happy.

I believe in sociability. We live in urban isolation, spend time with others, the human contact is important. Even if all you do is watch movies and play video games, doing it with someone else is always better then doing it alone.

Sitting on my death bed and with a final breath and sigh, say "I regret nothing". Simple as that

The balance of differences. You appreciate a hug more after you've taken a beating. You're more watch full after you've taken the sting of flame. You become more intellectual as you take criticism. There is good from every bad and every good has bad influences. It keeps you on your toes. Ever watchful and thinking of the things around you. Making your own mind to make up opinions of an action.

A job I can feel confident in, as I feel pretty lousy without one right now.
There's also something to be said for the fulfillment that a job well-done brings.

My health.

And

My dog, she went through hell the first 3 years of her life until we got her for free off of some lady, she was pretty much chained up all time and ran in a circle, she wasn't well fed you could clearly see her ribs and pelvis, my family saved her and she is healthy, active plus has a clear personality even at age 12.

So ya, health and the well being of everything.
