: Voice Modulation for Suiting
: Fazar July 11, 2012, 03:37:39 -06:00
This isn't quite a sewing thing, but seems the most accurate place as it regards fursuits.

So I'm a firm believer that a audio que is one of the most important things for setting yourself apart from other suiters as they often are quiet people.  Whether it's Flux(or Kheetah) with the squeaks, or Buddy with his.. vocal character.  I always thought having something auidable would be neat.

So I'm in the process of making my own fursuit, and I've always thought that having something to modulate my voice in real time might be a neat quirk.  I've tried.. so hard to find something that works with it, but the options seem very limited as voice modulation seems to be done primarily either on a desktop, or as a post production thing.

Ontop of that if I were to use some sort of mic/speaker thing in a fursuit I fear that it would cut off one of the main areas of ventilation, which would be the mouth.

Just for sake of discussion, has anyone else thought about this, or how to go about doing it?  Any suggestions?

For reference the voice I was looking at was for a sort of ghostly like character of mine.

I've never done it nor wouldn't know the first thing about trying it, but it sounds awesome and I wish you luck!!!!

Thanks Weremagnus :)

Hopefully, one day I can really wow people.  All the work will have been worth it I feel.

I wouldn't have any experience with any sort of voice modulation, but i remember when the last Transformers movie came out, Wal-Mart was selling a Optimus Prime mask that had realtime voice modulation. So i know the tech is out there. If i recall though, you had to speak rather softly though, otherwise you could hear your normal voice mixed with what was coming out of the speaker. I think it would mostly come down to cost and how much of a difference there is between the tone of your voice and the effect you're trying to achieve.

I don't know if this helps really, but best of luck with this. It would definitely be a kewl feature to have in suit!

You could still have ventilation in the mouth, it all depends on where you mount the speaker. There are two ways to do this; one is to do as in the voice changer where it is a voice amplifier circuit with components that distort the output which isn't really all that cool and sounds cheap. The other thing you can't try is to get a smart phone and find someone to write you a voice modulation program which will give you a much larger range of what you can do. If you don't have a smart phone I remember in one thread they were talking about the raspberry pi which is cheap and probably the best thing you can use as you can use it for other components of your suit such as temperature sensitive fans or lights.
