: How do you feel about real fur?
: ravewoif June 22, 2012, 03:18:16 -06:00
I'm not looking for unnecessary drama, but what are your views on real fur?

I am ok with real fur as long as it a) died of natural causes b) road kill or c) was killed by accident(not hunted or sought out to be killed)

other then that I think that real fur can look quite nice, I just don't really want any myself.

No qualms at all about real fur.

I am fine so long as it wasn't like... animals bred and raised to be skinned. Furs as a result of hunting? Sure, so long as you eat the animal you killed.

I probably wouldn't wear real fur unless it was something I hunted/processed though.

I won't wear it. The reason being that (almost) every fur coat out there is made from fur that comes from what most people would consider to be less then reputable sources. That being said, if I were to hunt an animal and could make use of the pelt, I would.

In terms of hunting for furs, I'm fine for hunting for survival, not hunting for sport - that I shall have to object.

Agreed. You gotta eat what you kill.

I like real fur. Don't really care how the animal died. Would rather not think about it, personally. Be it accident, or on purpose, and if it was on purpose, what those purposes were, and how they handled it. Don't want to hear about it.

I don't really mind either way. I wouldn't really wear fur (fake or real) anyway in normal day to day 'fashion.'

Being able to feel the fur of live wild animals would be nice. I'd like a sweater knitted from bear fur, I think it'd feel really cozy.

I got an idea to make a real fur tail but don't need a whole sheep skin, if anyone's got some scraps I'd consider trading for it.

I will eventually make a suit with sheep pieces but that won't be for awhile.

That's probably because of your statement "I'm not looking for unnecessary drama" *poke*so we decided to keep it civilized.

Wearing real fur as clothing can be a challenge, sure looks nice, but most people would have their doubts and thoughts. I't rather have real for as an ornament such as a bed cover or pillow cover on a couch. You get to appreciate it.

Interesting statement Wrath, it is true you prefer not to know the animal's life. A similar though crosses my mind when eating meat every now and then. Though after seeing several videos on animal cruelty how cows, chicken and pigs are being processed and handled, I keep eating meat (maybe a little less). And some of those videos have made me throw up.

Oh god don't remind me of those videos. I can't imagine what kind of a sick fuck  would work there and do that as a daily job.

Given my choice of character I have some rather strict opinions about it with regards to certain species ( ie. endangered fur isn't acceptable under any circumstances ). Looking onto other things I have more mixed views on things but end up coming to the same conclusion. While I think it's possible to hunt and kill responsibly and without waste I honestly think we'll have to stop hunting entirely and build up the legal practice of hunting again before we really have a handle on how to responsibly manage these sorts of things properly, just look at how our fisheries have been managed due to the pervasive need of the present industry.

For both hunting and fishing I really think there should be a full stop almost across the board for 5-10 years depending on the species and how it's doing when they can do some detailed research on the population when it's not under pressure. Basically give the natural ecosystems some time to repair itself in whatever way it sees fit before deciding just how much hunting is appropriate instead of just continuing to hunt x amount because it was ok last year. Besides researching the ecosystem some effort should be put into working out how a legal and widely accepted furs industry for one species would affect others. As an example if they made it legal to start hunting zebras and making fur clothing of them this would almost certainly increase demand for tiger pelts which may not be legal ( and currently certainly aren't ).

After this is done and it's found that some species can sustain a certain amount of hunting without any serious knock-on effects on other species of concern I'd be fine with hunting but right now we're just not informed enough or organized enough to handle this correctly worldwide.

Likewise I think TCM( Traditional Chinese Medicine ) should be banned for a few years until they can get a handle on the all-too-sizable poaching problem the darker side of that practice spawns. I know it's draconian to do so but I don't see that being dealt with on their own time before at least a few key species become extinct in the wild.

Interesting view point on Chinese Medicine, there is some partial truth in that. You can always sell a rare (and illegal) product and make the consumer believe it will be to their benefit (that's usually what "entrepreneurs" do).
