: What are fun things to do 'outside'
: Fazar May 10, 2012, 05:13:44 -06:00
Outside has often scared me as it's an unforgiving place with a giant furnace in the sky blazing.

This in part a larger part of me having an office job and feeling really antsy to get out or not sit at home when I get home.  I am a bit conditioned to enjoying the safe confines of inside, and often 'hanging out' with people probably isn't much of an option as people will have 1 day in a week they 'may' be able to hang out.

This is partially spurred by the fun I've often had at fur conventions where I don't spend time gaming at all. I just have trouble trying to find something to do.

I guess so far all I can think of is
-walking
-biking
-skateboarding(never done it)
-Skiing(winter)
-Sports?(Kind of didn't enjoy sports too much in Highschool)

Generally looking at alternatives to do from Gaming.  The weather definitely is getting to the place it's nice to get out.

I myself love camping or fishing or just walking in the woods. A picnic in the park is nice too. I also have a seadoo and a quad, for some motorized fun :D

I guess you could probably hang out at the local mall or something, or just take a Skytrain ride for the heck of it.

going for walks, hikes, etc are great on your own and with friends. Going swimming is always fun too. There are outdoor and indoor pools as well as lakes (if you like the cold XD ) and a few beaches.
As a few above have said, exploring trails can be pretty fun. Nice views, interesting finds, etc.

If you ever wanting to REALLY go hiking to see some beautiful sights, let me know! I can take you and a few other people (maybe zee or hex) and we could go down to squamish and hike the chief. The sight at the top is so worth the work.

Might be rock climbing around. I dont know of any places that have outside stuff other then bouldering but it could still be fun.

Someone said camping above too. Thats normally pretty fun if your with the right crowd :3

I'm gonna try to organize a few hikes in the Chilliwack/Lower-Mainland area this summer.  A few of my favourite places to hike are Lindeman Lake, Mt Cheam, Othello Tunnels, Teapot Hill, and various other trails I come across.

I love to go swimming in lakes.  Keep an eye out for Gizmo's "Furries on the Beach," events at Harrison Lake.  They're completely awesome.  Cultus isn't a bad lake to swim in, but it gets really really busy on weekends.

River parties.  When I was in college, I used to go to these almost every weekend.  A few friends would grab some pallets from the warehouse they worked at and bring 'em down to the Fraser River in their truck, and we'd light 'em on fire and drink beer and play with fireworks.  I don't attend that many nowadays, but I do go to the occasional one (usually involves a lot of 4x4ing) =)

Here are some tips from another fur who doesn't get out as much as he should, lol. When I go out, I always try and make a little day-trip out of my excursion. Take a pair of bus passes, pick a spot in Vancouver, and go wander about, seeking and finding some nice new nook of the city you haven't otherwise known about yet. Personally, I'm a great fan of going to Granville island. Compared to a basement of video games and high definition TV's, I find the isle quite new and refreshing with its rustic seaside charm. Even Better is the fact that most days when it's sunny you'll find any of a number of street performers in the little town square there. My favorite has always been the traveling magician. Good sense of humor, that guy. :)

Going outside there are two areas I read in this thread:

1. Urban or suburban areas (city)

2. rural area (nature)

Depending on what you are looking for both areas are enticing. The city of Vancouver offers a lot of events similar to street markets, though for these you may need to check the calendar to see when and in which neighborhood they happen. Granville is definitely a great place for food and events (even though it may feel a little bit of a tourist trap). But also explore other neighborhoods and see what dining and stores there are is worth while. Cambie Street and Main Street in south Vancouver have a lot of businesses you can explore, though the former street has more the small boutique, which adds to the charm.

If you have a bike that makes it easy to explore larger parks such as the one in Burnaby or by UBC main campus. The buses in lower mainland as well as skitrains allow to take bikes, though you have to plan accordingly.
It seems you are also looking to play sports outdoors, basketball, tennis or even soccer being an option. Also try snow shoeing in the winter, great experience.

Neox, definitiely inform me when you plan a hike or even a swim in a lake, which I enjoy A LOT. Unfortunately I will have to pass on Gizmo's furry swim for I'll be out of the country.
