: I hate MMORPGs (Kind of a rant)
: Ravenwood June 11, 2009, 06:34:25 -06:00
Now, I'll tell you, it's not through lack of trying.

I was a beta tester for Eve.  I've played EQ.  I've played WoW.

I found them all tediously boring and really, they all felt like second jobs, concidering the amount of time and dedication it took to actually get anywhere.

The closest thing to a MMORPG, but wasn't really an MMORPG that I actually liked was Hellgate: London.  And as holds true, almost every game that I seem to really like ends geting bumped in the Butt somehow.

Hellgate shut down it's multiplayer servers back in January.  It's dead and buried in North America because the company that owns the North American rights to it are being massive pricks and letting it die.  Concidering that it's still alive and doing well in Asia.

Honestly, short of TF2 I don't think there's been any games in the past year that has even hinted at even a glimmer of hope for good multiplayer gaming for me.

I expect that Starcraft2 will bore the living shit out of me, just like SC1 did.

I'm kind of pinning all my hope on an outstanding Diablo3, but dog knows when that'll ever see the light of day.

Alot of games suck nowadays. And besides why waste $60 or spend monthly fees on second jobs that are virtual lives. When you could spend that $30-60 to buy yourself about 5-15 Single player experiences from Xbox/PS2/GC  to the NES days?

So far I have purchased alot of games in bulk and I have accumulated so many games I enjoyed or wanna play for past systems that my newer systems are left in the dark. All I played on the 360 was dead rising. The Wii really has brawl to keep me from selling it. And well the PS3 has at least 4 games I enjoy playing on it :3

But I see me busting out older systems more often. Since I am tired of all the shovelware and motion sensing bullshit to last me 10 lifetimes. Sure I agree I don't hold hope for a better future in games. But at least when I try out a newer game with no expectations I got nothing to lose and everything to gain. Instead of buying into ridiculous hype. Like right now I am tearing apart Diablo 3 with the things they announced. But at the same time I really hope it proves me wrong >:/

I still enjoy WoW, but it's almost entirely because of the people I play with rather than the game itself.

Too bad that for virtually every guild that's actually worth being in, the first words out of their mouths are "What level are you and how good is your gear?"

If you can't manage to meet some high-ass standard, they tell you to piss up a rope.  Understandable, since they may have a hundred people a month want to join.  But for beginners, there's simply no chance of getting into anything worthwhile.

It's a further complication since they expect that everyoen that plays to be good.  So if you'r einexperienced at it, they laugh at you instead of actually helping.  From what I've personalyl seen, MMORPGS have the lowest level of general player empathy of any game I've ever played.  They make Counterstike seem like a love-in by comparison.

Our guild definitely isn't like that. We just require that people who want to raid and aren't good be willing to work on getting better. If they don't raid, it's not really a big deal whether they're good or not.

Yeah. I've mostly skipped over the whole MMORPG scene myself. My first was WoW which I played for 2 months near when it came out. I kept playing expecting it to stop being boring the higher I got, but it never did. It always felt like a chore to me.

This was exasperated by the fact that soon after I moved into a student apartment at my college with three friends. Thought we were going to have lots of fun all the but, but after the move they ONLY played WoW as the entirety of their lives. I think all three dropped out of college soon after that. My roomate could never go out with me to do stuff because he was always scheduled for Guild raids that he could never opt out of because the guild would stop inviting you to the good raids and other privileges if you didn't keep it up.

SL was different, I got into that seriously for years. But it dousnt count since I consider it a platform, not an RPG x3

I've played a LOT of MMOs in my time. The effort they take isn't what bothers me, it's how poor the gameplay in MMORPGS are. I mean, seriously, WHY THE HELL DO THEY STILL FOLLOW THE CLICK AND KILL FORMULA?! I swear, gameplay in MMOs would be so much better if they had more dynamic, real-time combat. Bonus points if they make monsters that require some kind of strategy to kill (Think Metroid Prime or Legend of Zelda. Though not MMOs, they kinda help my point, having monsters you can't kill with head-on attacks).

Though not gameplay, I'm getting really tired of the same theme over and over again. Fantasy or Sci Fi, nothing truly new or unique. You will ALWAYS see the goddamn conventional fantasy races, classes and feudal architecture. Personally, I'd like to see something down-right out of the ordinary. Something SERIOUSLY messed up, and some MMOs have done that, and I commend them for it. However, they fail me with the all-to-standard boring grind-fest gameplay. Yay.

Basically, I'm sick and tired of being stuck with Humans, Elves, Dwarves, yadda yadda yadda, etc. I want to see something else. I mean, developers are SUPPOSED to be CREATIVE, am I right? So why can't they make something that opposes the norm? Even if they have to stick to the conventional races, I'd still like to play something that's either not humanoid or not human-esque (I would KILL to play as a Goblin, or even a Unicorn).

Those are my biggest gripes with MMORPGS. It's not that they're not original (god only knows that's impossible these days, what with everything being done and all), it's that they make no apparent effort to be different or outstanding.

This bitch-fest brought to you in part by your epic, awesome and handsome HARE, HexV

Online MMORPG games I've played and tried I hated. Well most of them. Runescape sucked. Dofus sucked. WoW sucked. And any other game I tried that was online sucked.

Any online games I ever enjoyed were things like Counterstrike, Team Fortress (Classic, for I am not good with an Xbox for #2 and this was long ago), and (Please don't kill me for this...) Maplestory.

I am not big on sitting in a chair for hours on end playing a game though. I usually get bored after an hour or 2. Then I usually go off and do something for a while before I return.

No death for you.  Maplestory is probably one of the most unique of its kind, being MMO Side Scroller.

I played Maplestory for maybe five minutes, and then got a phone call from my temp agency to go to a job site, and completely forgot about it since.

ok guys

planetside is an mmofps, aim and shoot, lvl up unlocks new armour classes / guns. think of it like starting off just being able to play the soldier from tf2 but as you go on you can start playing the other classes; doesn't give you any advantage, just different ways to play.

Champions Online is an mmo action game about super heroes.

League of Legends, an mmo DotA game which is great

Fallen Earth, an mmo version of fallout.

battleswarm, one team plays it like an fps the other team plays it like an rts.

there are a LOT of good mmos out there that aren't your standard "Humans, Elves, Dwarves, yadda yadda yadda, etc."

...and when I tried PlanetSide's trial thingie a few years ago, oh my god the lag... :O  I'm not one to have a crappy computer or internet connection, and while the idea is brilliant (I love 64-person Battlefield: 1942 battles and huge sprawling vehicle maps like in Starseige: Tribes and Tribes 2), the execution is... meh. :/

I play D&D online myself. It's an MMORPG that's not really an MMORPG at all. Anyone can do quests solo, all the quests are fairly quick, the combat is like Diablo, and the best part?

NONE OF THOSE DAMN FETCH QUESTS! NONE!

Yeah I love Maplestory for being quite unique. It's the only reason I never got bored of it, even after 4+ years of playing it. But it's one of those MMOs where you can only be a human (Which I prefer anyways). Plus it's always kept fresh with new updates all the time.

I have yet to see a single MMORPG that can actually stay playable after you reached max level.  At that point, you've beaten the game and lets say you got the best gear.  Then what?  Run around and pvp to get your honour or whatever up?  Boring as hell.  Oh and about D&D online.  Sure it seems great, until you discover there are only two cities.  It would be nice if it branched out a bit since it is using the Ebberon world from D&D.  Maybe go read the actual adventure books and incorperate some of that into the game rather than a crapload of "go in the sewer and kill" dungeons.  So sick of just killing stuff in the sewers.  MMORPGs just are not that appealing because once you get to the end, then what?  Some people argue that it's all about the community and making friends.  Yeah okay then, but if I wanted that, why don't I just go on IRC or join a forum...like this one!  Hey, I found a community that's not retarded right here!  Bloody hate MMORPG "communities."

Maplestory is playable when you reach max level. If you wanna boost your fame, gather rare/expensive items for your lower characters on the same server, earn money, get lower characters to pay you to leech exp off of you in a party, finish your quests, earn medals, etc. Can't gain experience from killing monsters yourself, but there's still plenty to do. Or attempt to kill the hardest boss which is currently undefeated for the time being,

I think some MMORPGs want to believe they can be something like Second Life on the side - okay, you've reached max level, but you'll still pay and log in so you can 'hang out' with your friends and RP (ha!  Hahaha.  WoW's RP-servers are a joooke - good luck there) and that sort of thing.  But... you're paying for something you could do on a forum or IRC or a MU* or *gasp* Second Life itself.. and without the content creation capabilities those other things offer. :p

I can see some of the heavily-themed places supporting that sort of thing, where the fan/playerbase already has a tendency to RP - typically licensed content like Star Wars/Trek, D&D, Warhammer 40K, etc. that have lots of other media tie-ins for people to go on, but Warcraft?  Guild Wars?  No offense to the story writers, but they don't appeal to people who don't already play the games, so you end up with a very game-oriented, well, game, at the end, and if there's nothing to do or kill, people get bored and quit.  :/

With FF11 there's plenty of stuff that you can(and honestly, only can) do after you hit the max level... lots of dungones and battlefields you can go to... there's even a max level xp system called Merits where you can develop your character in other ways.. and of course there's always switching jobs to one of the other 20 you haven't done so yet and starting the whole process ad nauseam...
: Re: I hate MMORPGs (Kind of a rant)
: Kithop February 05, 2010, 11:02:33 -07:00
My old roommate used to play FF11 a ton... until he had two TVs set up, one for his PS2 so he could sit looking for a group in FF11, and another TV with his Xbox 360 to play a different game on while he waited.

A few months of basically waiting for a few hours on the PS2, finally getting a group, and then not even wanting to play because he didn't feel like it at the time and going back to the Xbox go by, and he finally realizes 'wait - why am I paying to not even play this game?'... c.c

I heard they changed it recently so anyone can group with anyone, regardless of level, and get XP together, but apparently soloing anything is a joke.  I understand it's an MMO, but not everyone has time to do EVERYTHING with their friends or other people on there... I know - I used to have problems getting groups in EverQuest as well until WoW came out and gasp you could solo all the way to max level if you wanted.  With any class. :O  Sure, it would be more fun and probably much faster/easier if you did it with friends, but you weren't forced to, and I think that's something a lot of the 'hardcore' MMOs do that turn people off.

Oi, Final Fantasy 11.  That game never should have received that title.  I don't want to say it is not "part of the main game line" because there is no actual series story line but still.  It's an MMO and should have been called Final Fantasy Online and save the number for some other game.  Mainly cause I remember back in the mid 90s, square said they only wanted to make 13 final fantasy games.  But now 11 and a 14 are both MMOs with trailers that don't show how the game actually is.  It's just disappointing on an advertising level.  With Maple Story, I played it back when there were only two or three servers and they were so full of spammers that it took five full minutes to go from one end of a town to the other.  Damn spammers.  Also, my cousin is actually paying a subscription to Maple Story and I had to smack him for that one.  MMORPGs I actually enjoy would be Neverwinter Nights 1 or 2 if you can find a good server because they are essentially actual online D&D games, quite unlike D&D online.  And yes I do consider games that can hold 32 people in one server to be an MMO.  I did try guildwars but I didn't like the idea of buying so many add-ons that still wont drop in price.  Runescape is utter failure and I don't really need to go into that one.  Personally, what I would love to see is a Call of Cthulhu MMO or maybe even Shadowrun.  Yes I know there is an RPG maker MMO of Call of Cthulhu but I am not counting it.

I've never really liked the "Intensive" MMOs all that much since they all seem to suck all your time out of you while never going anywhere. I'm a casual player and so I'm drawn to free, casual games like the former Nexus War, and Dead Frontier that don't depend on you sitting in a chair all day.

I'm the guy that actually likes playing games for the experience itself, and not grinding for grinding's sake, so comparing my situation to the EVE-ers and WOW,Nerds!-People, I do think I'm better off.

Just throwing my two pence.  ;)

Honestly... after playing RPGs(video and non) like ff10, ff13, 7th Sea, Shadowrun... I'm becoming increasingly drawn to a more gradual and customizable leveling system rather than "Grind, BAM benefits, lather, rinse, repeat"  Unless the Grinding is really not that ornerous... *coughflyffandDreamofmirrorcough*  At least with the Megaten MMO.. you can actually kinda chat with demons to recruit them rather than grind all the time..

I used to play WoW, still have an account, but it's not active. I've also played EQ1, EQ2, AO, GW, LOTR, beta tested Linage 2. MMOs are cool, but I get bored of them. Right now I am playing BFBC2 (a new FPS), love it and am in a weekly tourney for it.

I find the more I play MMOs, the more I see the artifice behind them instead of the "game" - the little things they do to keep you playing and bind you to the game so you don't feel like you can leave...

The only MMORPG games I have played are Diablo 2 and Runescape *waits to get flamed for playing the last one*

To rant on em is really kinda pointless though IMO, because is simply 1 genera of games. I myself am a huge FPS nut as well, but some times I like to sorta just kick back with a grind fest game like Runescape simply because its one of those games where you feel like your building something up, you got character development and with that you can do more epic and fun things where as with a FPS your really just putting yourself out there with a (insert fancy name for sub-machine gun here) Im not bashing FPS because I am a huge fan, but they do get boring at times or real annoying since you got the same kind no lifers whpo have like some uber level'd MMORPG character, except they are instead guys who can camp at the far corner of a map and get a bulls-eye on like the exat same spot on your face every time you run/jump/serpentine your way out of the spawn.

I've only read the first post... but in my opinion, two of those three games are horrible choices if you don't want to be dedicated to the game (EQ I have not played.) Eve is just a massive black-hole for time, and WoW makes it a bit difficult to play with friends in my experience. My personal favorite MMORPG of all time has to be Guild Wars. You can reach the level cap in less than a week, and from there everyone is equal, and the game is then based on skill, foresight and teamwork. Gear has only very minor variations, so players who only have 30 hours of gameplay compared to players with 500+ hours of gameplay will have very similar gear in terms of quality and how much of a boost it gives you. Almost nothing is permanent, you have dozens of different skills for your character, but you can only bring eight into a fight, each one being linked to one of several attributes, which you can pump points into to make the skills of that attribute stronger (ex: soul reaping for necromancers.)

I personally think that the idea is brilliant. I get a bit annoyed in games like WoW when players who have the time to play the game all day, every day end up being vastly more powerful than other players who enjoy the game just as much, but don't have the free-time to invest into the game. I like games where skill and intelligence play a greater role in determining the victor rather than how much experience the enemy player could grind up while you were gone and how much epic gear he got while farming all day.

I'm excited about Guilds Wars 2... most MMORPGs I've played since Guild Wars was released have been rather large disappointments. GWs skill and level system were love <3
