: [FOUND] "From Spongy to Bold" Needs a Bass Player! Heavy Metal/Prog/Grunge
: Kithop March 21, 2012, 04:29:45 -06:00
Hey everyone,

I'm looking for a musically-inclined person to help back me up in the band I'm starting, From Spongy to Bold - specifically, someone who can rock the bass. :) I've been a bass player myself for years, and have decided to give the fronting-and-playing-rhythm-guitar thing a try. I have a lead guitar player and drummer that I've played with in a previous project ('Final aNiX', an anime/Jrock cover band) on board, and a gig coming up in June - my brother's wedding. :p We've been asked to play some classic rock covers at the reception, though the project's future beyond that is going to be decidedly based on fresh, original material.

If you managed to make it to Howloween or the just-recently-past VancouFur convention, you may have seen me play and sing in the variety show. Next year, I'd like to expand that to be a proper band show for everyone, but I need YOU to help me make it happen! :D

I have a Kustom 1200HD head & Avatar B410 NEO cab from my bass playing days available for you to use if you need to, and we typically get together to practice at Charts Music in Burnaby, a short walk south of Royal Oak SkyTrain station (still figuring out exact dates/times with everyone's prior commitments and schedules). I'm looking for someone with at least a few years of experience, preferably including live gigs, as the material we're looking to write is decidedly technical. Influences range from 70s Heavy Metal (Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden), 80s Thrash (Metallica, Megadeth), 90s Grunge (Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots), Prog Metal (Rush, Dream Theater, Protest the Hero), and Hair Metal (Bon Jovi, Mr. Big, Extreme).

We all extensively use Guitar Pro (www.guitar-pro.com (http://www.guitar-pro.com)) to write and learn material, and expect to come to practice with songs memorized and ready to go (though we don't always meet that expectation ;P) - GP is not a requirement as we have varying export/import options, but it does make life a lot easier.

Longer term, we're planning on writing and recording an album and seeing where things go from there; we already have a fair bit of gear towards that end. We have a bit of material from previous projects that can be smooshed together, but I'm hoping to do something a bit fresher and more unified going forward.

Again, I specifically need a BASS player; guitar-only players, I thank you, but at the moment need not apply (that may change in the future if you're downright exceptional, but bass is our entirely most pressing need).

Poke me in this thread or PM me if you're interested or have questions.

Thanks!
- Gary "Kithop" Carter

Edit: Found someone. :)  Next will likely be a new drummer at the end of August if ours gets in to the school he's trying for.  In Nelson. :/

Question is - how long have you been playing and are you comfortable playing with people in their mid 20s?  Well, aside from our drummer who's a bit younger. :p

We can always get in touch and meet up this weekend or something if you're interested, but I do need someone solid.  I've been playing guitar for over 15 years; over half my life. ;)

I wouldn't mind coming out to jam with you and see if I fit your profile.  I'm not very strong at bass, but I DO know how to play a bit.  I have a Yamaha 5-string, but no real amp/cab for a bass (I use it mostly for direct-to-mixer recording).

Sure!  Our drummer is out at Sakuracon this weekend, but I'm hoping to get everyone together possibly next weekend; what day(s) are you free, typically?

Also, if you like, PM me your e-mail and/or IM of choice and I'll forward more details.  Right now we're just going to start with covers for my brother's upcoming wedding, but plan to switch to all-original material afterwards once the lineup's stabilised.

I went back and re-read your original post after I made mine and realized that you guys are actually looking for like, a full-time bassist.  Unfortunately, since I live in Chilliwack, this isn't really feasible for me.  For some reason I was thinking you were just looking for a guy to jam with now and again.  Sorry man.  My bad. =\

No problem - yeah, we're looking for full time stuff.. I'm hoping to even get practising up to more than once a week, buying a van, etc. :P  Thanks, though!
