: Regarding fursuits
: Ja'Nathun March 10, 2012, 12:00:20 -07:00
Hello fellow furs. I'd like to share something a little embarrassing with you. You see, I'm a tiny bit phobic of any sort of mascot-type costume. Don't know when this all started, but Freud would surely say it happened when I was young. Anyways, I've been wondering a few things pertinent to this for a long time; namely, is it odd that I don't have a fursuit, and is it perhaps more odd that being around someone in one would be a mildly uncomfortable sensation for me?

(to clarify, I've never been around someone else in a fursuit before >~>)

I don't think that it is particularly odd that you are/would be uncomfortable around people in fursuits. As a matter of fact, one of my good friends here on the island (who is a furry) is also uncomfortable around fursuits.

Every person is different, unique. If I had all the money in the world, I would spend the rest of my life studying humanity; sexuality, psychology, behaviour, etc. In that lifetime, I wouldn't even come close to fully understanding people. That's one of the things I love most about our species. ^.~

Also, there is nothing at all odd about not owning a fursuit. A large portion (I'm inclined to say most) of the furries I know or have met do not own suits. You're not alone. ;)

It is hardly odd that you don't have a fursuit.

When I was very young, I used to be extremely shy around suits or mascots. I never figured out why. At some point in my life I somehow got over it, I don't know how or why. Though, I still find my shyness kind of sneaks into things now and then. Its just part of who I am. Everyone's different.

Initially I was shy around fursuits - it's one of those warm-up phases while you integrate yourself in the furry community.
My shyness exists for me because I use it to hide my embarassment in terms of my lagginess in expressing my words in person. I still do get embarassed at times, and give a form of pre-conversation "disclaimer" of sorts, but I digress.

I've heard several times that the ratio of fursuit-owning furries to non-fursuit owning furries is about...1 to a 100? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

It can be anything between just a set of ears, or a tail, to a full on fursuit. You are more likely to see people with partials (such as the aforementioned ears or a tail) than full suits. Its really hard to give it a figure, or ratio, because it changes quite a lot where ever you look.

If you go by the stats from cons(over all attendance VS fursuit parade) it's about 15-25% own or have a fursuit

Now see, there's something I can predict I'd have a hard time showing off. I mean, maybe behind closed doors I'd put on a tail or something. Where do you get those sorts of things anyways? ???

Oh, there's quite a few people who can make them. Here's the best list of fursuit creators I've found: http://www.graywolfservices.com/Suitmakers.html (http://www.graywolfservices.com/Suitmakers.html)

I am curious about local ones, I was having a hard time really finding them. Currently me and my mate are getting full suits from Noblewolf and he is over in Ontario. His prices and quality are both pretty decent but he has a good sized waiting list. Me and Morrogh are looking at anywhere from another 2-4 months for ours and we have been waiting almost two now haha. But just shows how popular his suits are getting.

Haha. Oh nonono, I wasn't talking about acquiring a fursuit, but rather some ears or a tail. Where does one go to find THOSE things?   :P

i think they will all do just ears and tails in addition to full suits, and there were a couple of people at vancoufur with ears and tails as well (not know their names off-hand).

I think the figure's likely lower than that in the community at large since I'm going to guess that people who have suits are on the whole more likely to attend cons (either to show them off or because they're more likely to be into the fandom enough to want to attend cons).
